When it comes to pregnancy diet, you need to cautious while consuming raw papaya. Raw papaya comes in two types Ripe Papaya and Unripe Papaya. While Ripe Papaya can be a source of a number of healthy nutrients, Unripe Papaya consists of Latex which is extremely harmful to the fetus and can trigger uterine contractions leading to induced labor.

If you have eaten raw papaya with Latex, we would highly recommend that you visit your doctor to avoid any unforeseen circumstances. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Make sure you visit your doctor in time before the latex has caused any problems to your baby.

Here are some things that you should keep in mind while consuming Papaya in Pregnancy.

Is Papaya dangerous during pregnancy? Yes and No! There is a heavy confusion between the Papaya diet in pregnancy, and there need to be more answers than questions.

  • The yellow skin of the papaya is referred to as ripe papaya. Ripe papaya is a natural, rich and healthy source of beta-carotene, fiber, folate, choline, vitamins A, B, and C, and potassium. All of these nutrients are extremely important and beneficial for pregnant women and provide a source of nutrition that helps in the growth and advancement of the fetus.
  • The green skin of the papaya is referred to as unripe papaya. Unripe papaya is a natural and rich source of papain and latex. Both these ingredients are harmful to the baby and most importantly ‘latex’ that can cause a lot of troubles to the fetus.
  • Pregnant women should avoid the type of latex found in unripe papaya for a number of reasons.
  • It might lead to or trigger uterine contractions. This may result in early labor causing the baby to come out of the womb while it is still not fully-developed or grown.
  • Unripe papaya also happened to consist Papain that your body may end up mistaking for prostaglandins which are sometimes used to induce labor.
  • This ends up weakening the vital membranes that are required for supporting the fetus. This is a commonly experienced allergic reaction that can possibly trigger a dangerous reaction.

If you are going for raw papaya, make sure you eat the Ripe part and avoid the Unripe part. Some women also avoid eating papaya in pregnancy altogether to be on the safer side.
