Condensate Harvesting and its Benefits

Condensate harvesting refers to the collection of water vapor in the air that condenses freely on a cold surface. When the humidity or water vapor in the air gets into contact with a colder surface, water changes from gas to liquid and accumulates. This water vapor is called condensate. The most common example of condensate isthe drops thatform outside a cold drinking glass.  However, condensate is also present on the cold coils of air handling units in commercial buildings.  It is this condensate that is easily captured and can be treated for reuse.

Condensate harvesting comes with many benefits:

  1. Condensate harvesting contributes directly to the conservation of water. The water available in the condensate form is usually wasted. However, it is one of the most accessible sourcesof water to harvest, especially in factories and large industries where centralized air conditioners are widespread.
  2. ACs draw outside air across a coolant as well as into a structure via internal fan. When the moisture that is trapped in the warm outside cools, it condenses and forms a liquid. Condensate harvesting captures that water, which can then be treated for multiple non-potable application such as cooling tower make-up or irrigation.
  3. The water capturedthrough condensate harvesting is a relatively clean source of water. This means that the treatment of this water is a fairly simple process.  With minimal filtration and sanitation, it can be reused on site, saving water and money.
  4. Condensate harvestingcan also bea more reliable source for water harvesting. During heat waves and droughts, rainwater can be scarce but condensate will still be generated.

Condensate harvesting is a great option for saving water, lowering water bills and increasing a property’s sustainability.
