What is a skill that each marketing manager should possess?

Marketing managers have many skills that they need to be successful in their job. These include the ability to plan and implement a marketing strategy, understanding how different marketing channels work together to achieve desired goals, managing budgets for campaigns and executing on those plans effectively. But what is the one skill that each marketing manager should possess?

It's been said many times and I've often nodded along without thinking about it. But, content writing (not copywriting) is the most important skill a marketing manager should possess. At the end of the day, what isn't content? What marketing materials do you produce that nobody sees? At one extreme, everything you produce could be used as an SEO play. Why not make everything publicly available so it can be found by the masses? At the other end of the spectrum, you've got intimate content designed for one company or even one user. With tactics like account-based marketing, which caters to small targeted audiences, the content is still the most important aspect of marketing. Content writing is every marketer's secret weapon.

Marketing is all about communication: sharing information in both large groups and small conversations alike so that everyone understands what you're trying say - no matter who it's directed at (customers, employees). It takes special skillsets like organizational abilities mixed with interpersonal communications ability--all necessary attributes that make up an effective manager!

Communication skills are used by marketing managers in the following ways:

1.Making decisions in collaboration with their team
2.Creating a positive relationship with clients and customers
3.Listening to and responding to criticism and feedback
4.Creating press releases and quarterly reports

Copywriting is the number one skill to have as a marketer because it will help you in every single aspect of your work. Writing helps you with social media marketing, content marketing, ads, website copy, product copy, you name it. There is not a single aspect of a modern company's work where a good writer doesn't come in handy every day.

Copywriting. Even if you're managing and not writing yourself, being a great copywriter helps you in so many ways. It helps you become a better communicator with your team. It helps you come up with creative and inventive campaigns. And maybe most importantly, it helps you edit and oversee your team's content production. You'll be able to have skilled eyes on every ad, web page, blog post, email, and product description your team produces. This will make you a more effective manager, and help your team put out more impressive work on a regular basis. The best way to hone your copywriting skills is by practicing (a lot) and studying other great marketing copy and campaigns.

For me, it’s flexibility. Marketing is a fast-paced environment, especially in SaaS and online businesses. We see new tools, approaches, tactics, and channels emerge every month. So it’s important to be open to something new and ready to adjust and experiment if needed.
Whether it’s LinkedIn setting new activity limits, Google changing their algorithms again, or another competitor emerging in your niche - ability to pivot and adapt on the go is vital to any marketing manager.

Marketing managers often act as middlemen between different roles and departments within the organization or even outside of it. In this case, flexibility means being able to find balance and reach compromise to keep all of the involved parties happy while still reaching your primary goals.

I'd say the must have skill for each marketing manager is the skill of storytelling. We all love stories, we like reading books and watching movies, great stories draw our attention. Same thing in marketing, telling a story of your business growth is great for customer acquisition. By telling your story you can share your business idea with the readers as well as educate them how to succeed in some particular areas. Don't limit storytelling only by content, also try using videos and infographics for sharing your ideas.

Each marketing manager should have solid project management skills. As the Internet continues to grow and social media platforms continue to increase each year, marketing managers have to adapt to the increasing numbers of campaigns, content, and clients.

Marketing managers are responsible for a lot of things and without solid project management skills, their job can become overwhelming and their marketing efforts can easily go down the drain if they forget to keep up with simple tasks.

Project management skills don’t just focus on managing projects, it also requires managers to be able to delegate tasks, keep their tasks manageable, be able to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and execute projects well. Thankfully, marketers can learn project management skills with experience and time.

Storytelling. Be it a product marketer, growth hacker, content marketer or anyone who has the term marketer in their titles should be good at storytelling. What is storytelling? It's an art of communicating things in a way it interests an audience. A picture I saw recently on the internet compared sales and marketing with 2 images. First image of a man waiting for a pickup holding a placard that reads "Going to Santa Fe" and the second image of a man waiting for a pickup holding a placard that reads "Going to parents' for Christmas".

The second image was titled marketing and the first as sales. This could be one prime example why marketing is all about how you project or communicate something. Basically storytelling. With the kind of marketing happening around the world, I strongly believe how you tell your brand story will be the key to your success as a marketer and for your product to stand out in the crowd.

The responsibilities of a marketing professional are numerous, and that's why the requirements and expectations for their skills are super high. This specialist deals with market research, planning marketing campaigns, negotiating the budget, managing team members, and much more. Given that, skills like communication, analytics, time management, teamwork, and stress management are among the most popular ones to expect from a marketer.

But I would add one tiny yet critical skill most marketers wrongly assume unimportant: writing. In today's world of remote work, when a big part of interaction takes place via written communication, it's critical to know how to convey the right message. Writing skills help a manager prevent misunderstandings, craft clear documentation, and find words for creating a marketing message that engages customers and establishes emotional connections with the target audience.
