5 Ways to Make Your Deck Last Longer

A deck builder is an individual who specializes in the construction, installation, and maintenance of wood decking. These individuals are often self-employed and typically work with a range of customers.

Dealing with water damage can be a major issue for homeowners as well as builders alike. The key to avoiding this issue is to make sure you keep your decks dry after it rains or when they are being cleaned.

Here are five ways that you can do just that:

  1. Keep your deck clean

After every time you use your deck, it is important that you give the surface a quick wipe down with water and a cloth or paper napkin. This will remove any food droppings, dirt, leaves or other debris left over from when you used the space last. Make sure to concentrate on high traffic areas such as seating areas and the area around the grill.

Going further than giving your deck a simple wipe down, you can wash it with soap and water each month in order to remove any build up of dirt or mildew that may have built up on its surface during that time period. You should also use a stiff brush to remove any mold from between the sections of your deck.

To keep mold growth to a minimum, you should let your deck dry out thoroughly before applying another coat of sealant and waterproofing spray. Make sure that the wood is completely dry prior to doing so in order to avoid any damage from mold or mildew. Additionally, if you live in an area where you are prone to heavy rains, you should consider applying a coat of sealant each week during rainy seasons.

  1. Protect your deck with a cover

If you are unable to wash your deck once a month, or if you live in an area that has frequent rainfall and moisture issues, it is important that you find an effective way to shield the wood from these elements. One effective method of doing so is by using covers.

Many lumber yards and home improvement stores will sell slip on covers for your deck. These can be purchased for relatively low prices and will protect the wood from any moisture that may build up on its surface.

  1. Use chemical resistant sealants

In order to prevent water damage, it is important that you use a waterproofing treatment on your deck each winter before the cold weather sets in. When doing so, be sure to choose a sealant that will be resistant to the high levels of moisture and water exposure that it may face over the next several months.

  1. Implement a ventilation system

One way to protect your deck from moisture is to use an effective ventilation system around its perimeter. By doing so, you can ensure that there are adequate amount of airflow around the surface of your deck in order to keep it dry.

When installing a ventilation system, be sure that there are no gaps around the perimeter in order to prevent moisture from building up between the wood sections. Additionally, if you have any air conditioning vents around the area where your deck is located, make sure they do not blow directly onto its surface in order to avoid damage.

  1. Upgrade your deck's structure

If you have an older style deck, it may be time to consider replacing it with a newer version. Many old decks were built using pressure treated wood that does not seal properly, which can leave them susceptible to moisture build up and damage from the elements. Replacing your deck with a newer, sturdier version will help ensure that it stays in good shape for many years to come.

While decks are a huge investment, they can last for decades if you take the right precautions. The five tips listed above will help you keep your deck in good condition so that it lasts as long as possible and doesn’t break down after just a few years of use.
