THE BEST WAYS TO USE CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL.

Have you come across cedarwood oil? You're missing out if you don't. It may not be as well-known or popular as oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, or tea tree, but it is just as potent. It has a wide range of applications, including insect repellent, sleep aid, and concentration aid.

When newcomers to essential oils ask me to recommend a "starter kit" of a few essential oils, cedarwood oil is always near the top of my list. I've been using it for years and have greatly benefited from it. Science backs it up as well. Continue reading to learn more about the best uses for cedarwood essential oil.

What Is the Purpose of Cedarwood Essential Oil?

As the name implies, Cedarwood essential oil is derived from the wood of the Cedar tree. There are many different types of cedar trees depending on where they are grown. It is found in cold climates and at high altitudes. (source)

Steam distillation is used to extract the oil, which contains a plethora of medicinally active compounds. Alpha-cedrene, beta-cedrene, cedrol, windrow, thujone, and sesquiterpenes are a few examples. I'll go into more detail about a few of these later. (source)

BEST WAYS TO USE CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

1. It promotes hair growth.
If you suffer from hair loss or simply want longer, thicker hair, cedarwood oil may be just what you need. A study of 86 patients with alopecia areata was conducted. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes bald patches and, in severe cases, total baldness.

In the test group, a mixture of four essential oils, including cedarwood oil, was massaged into the scalp on a daily basis. In the control group, inert carrier oils were used to massage the scalp. In the test group, 44 percent of patients saw an improvement in hair growth, compared to 15 percent in the control group.

Any type of massage will promote hair growth by increasing blood flow to the area.

This nourishes and oxygenates the hair roots, causing them to grow. The essential oil treatment, on the other hand, produced nearly three times the results of the plain oil massage. According to the study, essential oils such as cedarwood oil are "a safe and effective treatment for alopecia areata." (source)

2. It may help with concentration.
Cedarwood oil may help you focus your mind, making it an excellent choice for students or the workplace. One study looked at the effects of cedarwood essential oil on children who had ADHD (attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder). ADHD is characterized by a shorter than usual attention span and a proclivity to become easily distracted.

For thirty days, the participants inhaled vapor from a bottle of cedarwood oil three times a day. The outcome was assessed using ECG and a neuropsychological test is known as the "Test of Variables of Attention" (TOVA). There was a 33 percent improvement.

The high concentration of sesquiterpenes in cedarwood essential oil is responsible for this dramatic improvement. Sesquiterpenes improve brain cell oxygenation. (source)

3. It is an effective insect repellent.
Cedarwood oil is widely used as an insect repellent, and the scientific evidence for this is compelling. There have been numerous studies conducted on the use of cedarwood oil against various insect species.

According to one study, many components of cedarwood oil have insecticidal properties against the pulse beetle and the housefly. The insects were killed in 97.5 percent of the cases. Himachal and -himachalene, two naturally occurring sesquiterpenes, were blamed. (source)

Another study looked at its effectiveness against cockroaches. It was discovered that it had repellent properties but did not kill the cockroaches. Because it only repelled 63 percent of cockroaches, it is best used in conjunction with other methods. (source)

Finally, researchers looked into the toxicity of cedar oil vapor on clothes moths.

I've used this method in my own home, but it's only proven to kill moths at the beginning of their life cycle – the newly hatched larvae. It has no effect on older moths. (source)

4. It Can Assist You in Sleeping
Many essential oils have sedative and anti-anxiety properties. For this purpose, I was most familiar with lavender and chamomile. Cedarwood oil, on the other hand, has been shown to have sedative properties.

Cedrol, a major component of cedarwood oil, was the subject of one study. When given in conjunction with a conventional sedative (phenobarbital), it was discovered to prolong sleep time in lab rats (source)
