The Resurgence of a Legendary Hero, Captain America Makes This a Popular Halloween Costume

The official Captain America costume is once again a highly sought after Halloween outfit. The character it's based on, Captain America, who was first introduced in 1940, has been enjoying a new resurgence of interest amongst youngsters. The iconic character's rising popularity has been driven by the release of a new series based on the character, and by his long standing appearance on different animated Television shows.

Captain America is one of the oldest, and most legendary, of any of the comic book super heroes. He is also one of the most symbolic. He was created just prior to America's involvement with the Second World War against the Nazis, and was intentionally created as a patriotic symbol of American justice.

The story of Captain America's alter ego, Steve Rogers, is also steeped in patriotism.

Steve was born in 1917 to Irish immigrants. His father died when he was very young, and his mother died of pneumonia when he was a teenager. He was a scrawny young man studying fine arts when he became very disturbed at the rise of the Third Reich. The young man attempted to enlist in the military but was turned down due to his health. Instead, he was offered the chance to undergo experimental testing by the military to create the prefect soldier. Steve readily agreed.

The military injected him with an experimental Super Soldier Serum. The serum worked. Steve's body instantly transformed into a "perfect" specimen of human development and conditioning. Unfortunately, the only scientist who knew the secret formula was killed by a Nazi spy, leaving Steve the one lone subject who underwent the procedure.

The government, looking to use Steve as a counter intelligence officer and propaganda tool, created a bullet proof uniform for him modeled after the American flag, and the president, Teddy Roosevelt, provided him with an indestructible shield, which could also be used as a weapon.

And just like that, Captain America was born...

Throughout the years the character has evolved into a super hero fighting against evil villains, and righting the injustices he sees around him. He has become a champion of the American people and an iconic cultural reference.

One of the most appealing things about Captain America is the fact that he doesn't possess any super powers. The serum he was given simply enhanced his body and made it physically perfect. He was then put through intensive training by the military on hand to hand combat, gymnastics, martial arts, and military strategy. It's a key distinction, and one that makes him much more relatable.

Captain America is not only the perfect symbol for American freedom but also for American values. His story is the classic American tale. An average young man, rising from poverty, determined to help his country despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Someone who places the greater good of all over his own well being, and who works extremely hard to achieve his desired outcome; to be the greatest hero he could be, and to protect America and the freedom she stands for. And his favorite food is apple pie. How much more American can you get? See here captain america costume
