Five Tips to Keep Your Gold Chain New

So you’ve got your gold chain, you’ve worn it outside, and now you’re worried that it’ll lose its shine. Whether 10K, 14K, or 24K gold, a gold chain investment is supposed to last a long time. Treat your jewelry right, and it will return the favor. Here are five tips to keep your gold chains clean.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

What do I mean by harsh chemicals? Chlorine (don’t go swimming with your chain on), salt water, lotion, perfume, and (yes) even sweat can hurt the longevity of your chain. When performing strenuous activities, it’s best to take your jewelry off.

Don’t Sleep with Your Chain On

Looking to shine while getting some shut-eye? Don’t sleep with your chain on. The links can tangle and scratch as you toss and turn in bed, and you are one twist or inadvertent hand swipe away from completely snapping your chain. Chains with links that are a bit more ornate, such as diamond cut gold ropes, should be treated with care.

Keep Your Clasps Locked

Whether you have a box clasp, lobster clasp, or any other type, keep your clasps locked when your chain is removed. Locking the clasps, especially during storage, prevents the chain from tangling and knotting up. Once links get tangled, it is tough to untangle them without damaging the gold.

Have a Nice Place to Store Your Jewelry

This may seem like common sense, but many people simply toss their chains in their drawers or over their tables after a long day. To properly store a chain, find a box or bag that has ample padding or cloth to keep the gold from scratching. Most jewelers provide boxes with every purchase; it would be wise to keep these boxes for future use.

And Don’t Forget to Clean It

Duh. But what’s the proper way to clean it? I’ve mentioned before to avoid harsh chemicals. Here are some common ways to clean gold chains.

  • Use dishwasher detergent (just a little) and mix it in warm water
  • Soak the chain in a bowl of warm water
  • Scrub lightly with a soft bristle toothbrush (emphasis on the soft bristle)

Follow the above tips and your chain should never show its age. Gold is a soft and precious metal; it needs the time and care required to keep it shining the right way.
