The Nexon continues to be a hit from Tata Cars

The Nexon has been a successful product from Tata right since the get-go. With its unique, flowing styling, it was different from the competition and continues to be different from the rest. In 2020, Tata gave the Nexon a facelift and only seems to have boosted sales further with its aggressive styling.

Stylish yet compact

When it comes to the design, the Tata Nexon has it nailed. It looks perfectly proportionate from all angles and is the only SUV in its class that doesn't get a boxy silhouette. The grille is new; so are the sharp-looking headlamps and the sportier looking front bumper, featuring C-shaped surrounds on the light cluster below, plus a faux bull bar and scuff-plate. It gets tri-arrow patterns in the lower air intake; the Tata Nexon facelift even gets a newly designed bonnet. There are white strips running below the windows and the up-sweeping character line gives it a distinctive look from the side. Then there are the smoked-out C-pillars and it gets 'Nexon' badging on the rear across. The tail lights are the closest you can get to Union Jack lamps, plus there are faux vents on the lower half of the back bumper.

Solid and spacious

The interior of the Tata Nexon facelift hasn't changed much. The dashboard along with its free-standing screen and chome-bordered vents remain. The steering looks similar to the one on the Altroz, and instead of the analogue dials, you get a digital readout for the speedometer and other functions. The dashboard is of a tough build and the quality of the buttons has improved too. The doors get umbrella holders but the drive mode knob is a tough too large. When it comes to comfort, the Nexon has never disappointed; the cabin is wide and spacious and the seats up-ahead are positioned at a good height; even the footwell has ample room. The seats are of a good quality and the sunroof gives the cabin an airy feeling. Legroom at the back is enough; so is headroom, despite the sloping roof line towards the back. It gets an AC vent at the back and luggage room is practical at 350 litres.

Boost mode

The Nexon is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine that does result in some rocking motion when started up. Press down on the throttle, and as the revs climb, the engine sounds more refined. The engine doesn't sound sporty though but it does snarl at higher revs. The engine is smoother than it was, power delivery has improved, while also keeping in mind the importance of fuel economy. The 6-speed gearbox is not smooth, but it is light. The clutch, on the other hand, is snappy and that doesn't make it the best for the city. When it comes to ride quality, the Nexon is perhaps the best in its class. It feels stable, allowing you to carry good speeds over bad roads without breaking into a sweat. At low speeds, the suspension do feel stiff but it still manages to remain flat without getting unsettled.

The final say

With its updated engine, the Tata Nexon facelift has more pep and is smoother than it was but we just wish it delivered power more seamlessly. Ergonomically too, the Tata cars needs to improve. However, the Nexon is hard not to like for it brings with it stylish looks, improved quality, a very roomy cabin plus plenty of equipment. And it somehow feels so much more expensive than it was; Tata truly has come a long way when it comes to engineering. All of this makes it a great value-for-money product, helping it live up to its new car price, and in its new look, it almost feels the Nexon has been given a new lease of life. It's definitely right up there with the competition. The new car price of the Nexon ranges from ₹ 7 lakh to ₹ 12 lakh.
