Advice on applying for a job in security

If you are looking for a job in security, where do you start? A good place to look first is the internet. There are many sites on the Internet that specifically deal with different companies hiring people for security-related jobs.

A few security-specific sites are listed at the end of this guide. The next step is to research companies that you are interested in. Find out which ones are hiring and what they do. If there is a phone number for an office, give them a call and ask some questions about the job.

If you have experience in any part of security work, or are prepared to begin training immediately, this is the time to mention it. If you are still in college, look at programs that might help you secure a job after graduation.

Next, compile any information you have about yourself and make an application letter. If necessary, write more than one letter based on what type of job you are applying for and who you think would be your best contact.

A lot of security jobs are located in nightclubs and bars. If this is where you see yourself working, don't limit your search to specific establishments; also direct applications to companies that run security for several bars or clubs. If you have a friend who works at the company, ask them to refer you. In this case, your resume will be of great value, as an employer may hire someone recommended by a current employee.

If you are applying to a security company, request an application form. This will be sent to you along with any necessary information about the job.

Once you have filled out the required forms, turn them in at the required place on time, then wait for an offer or notice that your application was unsuccessful. If you don't hear anything back, call periodically to check on your status.

Phone the company you applied to at least once every two weeks, but don't pester them if they haven't gotten back to you yet.

Keep in mind that most security companies are small and cannot afford training for new personnel. This means that most of their openings are for experienced guards or bouncers.

If you apply and don't get hired, try not to take it personally. Look at your application carefully and see what you did wrong, so that if the company calls you back in the future, you can correct your mistake.

Also be aware that security work is subject to seasonal changes, such as increased demand for guards during New Year's Eve, and be prepared to work at odd hours.

Finally, if you want to apply for a security-related job but don't have any experience or training yet, then check out your local college. Many campuses provide security and similar courses that might help you start a career in the field.
