The Frauds of Volunteering Abroad and solidarity travel.

The frauds of volunteering abroad and solidarity travel.

Have you already done research for volunteer abroad? The results will shock you. The sites put forward posted volunteering proposals for which exorbitant amounts had to be paid. In your opinion, is it a fraud or a good action? Here is a short article that should allow you to learn more about the frauds of volunteering abroad.

The differences between volunteering abroad and solidarity travel.

Volunteering abroad is an unpaid (but sometimes compensated) mission, as part of an educational, social or environmental project. It can be an experience of a few weeks or months or even a year or two. During a volunteer, you will often have to interact with the local community. When volunteering abroad, you generally work for a local association.

The solidarity travel is something else. It is a form of alternative tourism, which favors meetings between travelers. In some cases, you will also give your time to an association or a local project, but most of the time, you will do tourism, you will visit typical villages and tourist sites. The main difference with mass tourism is that the agency that supports you has generally created strong links with local communities and allows you to better understand the daily lives of the country's inhabitants, by rubbing shoulders for a few hours or days. Best of all, some of the money you pay to the agency goes to a local development project. This is solidarity tourism.

Should I pay to volunteer?

YES, but be careful, not on any conditions. Some organizations, those that stand out first (via the advertising links and natural links) on the result page, display quite amazing prices. Some propose a humanitarian mission of 4 weeks for 1955 € and some others will go up to 2405 € for four weeks of eco-volunteering. One of these websites is an international volunteer organization. Everything is set up to give the impression that one has to do to an association, however, it is indeed a business for profit, and that turns out well! The 2012 accounts of his office show a turnover of about 550 000 €, profits (gross) of about 100 000 € and a net result of about 17 000 €, and nothing on the website indicates that part of the turnover is donated to local development projects. So it's not an association, not even a solidarity company, but just a company that makes money with solidarity.
You think what you want, but from my point of view, it looks like a fraud. Other organizations offer similar services invoiced for over a thousand Euros. I sincerely believe that the use of the term volunteering should be legally controlled.

Other solidarity travel agencies offer expensive services paid, including tourism and volunteering, but they are clearly presented as companies, andare often run by enthusiasts. For most volunteer missions, you still have to pay. Some statutes allow you to benefit from compensation, but you must have experience and there are always costs to you. In the case of short and medium-term projects or volunteers, there will be no compensation, but it will pay a handling fee (around 200 €), his plane ticket, or his visa fees and insurance. In most cases, housing, and sometimes food will be provided. Why do you have to pay for it to help people? First of all, because you are in a process of volunteering, not of wage labor, you have to assume it. Otherwise, study to work in humanitarian, as a doctor, specialist in food or logistics. Then, because for many volunteers, you do not necessarily need a lot of skills and / or people already on site could do it for a lot less than your plane ticket. Finally, volunteering does not necessarily mean humanitarian. Yes, you will take care of children in an orphanage; yes, you will give English classes, but will you change, improve, the lives of these people by doing this? Tell yourself that in most cases, they do not need you, and your passage will not really make any difference. It is more than a gift from you, an exchange, a sharing, and meetings... so many aspects that bring you too!

I therefore recommend going through associations that will put you in contact with local associations. You will have the choice between various forms of volunteers in many countries of the world. Is it the guarantee to live a real volunteer experience? A priori no. A person went to volunteer through an association like these, but the on-site partner was not serious, and the two volunteers on the spot had to "fight" for an experience that made sense. Associations with many partners around the world cannot always be able to guarantee the seriousness of these. So, there can be bad surprises like this, even if it must remain very punctual.

We remain in the spirit of solidarity tourism and the legitimacy of its actors. Last point: if you have already found an organization, I recommend you take a voluntary insurance for your stay and not take unnecessary risk.

there are plenty of volunteer programs in India if you are thinking about volunteering in India
