Physical Therapy Clinic in Brooklyn

Many people suffer from neck and shoulder pain but don't realize that it is very common. If you have been suffering from this type of pain for more than a few days, and you've tried several things to get rid of the pain, you may be ready to ask your doctor about a physical therapy treatment. Many times, physical therapy will help to improve your posture, as well. This will either eliminate or greatly alleviate neck and shoulder pain. Your PT will help you retrain the stabilizing muscles in both the front and the back of your upper neck so that they can give the strength and balance necessary to hold good posture throughout your daily life.

The problem with neck pain, whether it originates in the neck, shoulders, or any other part of the body, is that when a person is standing or sitting, the weight of their head and neck must rest on the supporting muscles and joints. When you are in this type of uncomfortable position, the bones in your neck and shoulders begin to stretch, which can lead to a number of aches and pains. Misaligned vertebrae can also put pressure on the nerves in these muscles, causing even more discomfort. An excellent physical therapy program will alleviate neck and shoulder pain caused by a number of different factors, including ligament injuries, arthritis, nerve root problems, and more.

You should also be aware that poor muscle function can cause neck and shoulder pain, as well. If you think you have poor muscle function, it is important to see your doctor to make sure there isn't an underlying condition causing the muscle weakness. Common problems include thyroid conditions, muscle imbalances, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, and more. Physical therapy can certainly improve the range of motion and strengthen the muscles around the joints, so you won't have to use them constantly to move comfortably. If your pain is related to a muscle issue, ask your therapist for specific exercises that can help strengthen and tone the specific muscles in your neck and shoulder area to relieve your pain and eliminate the underlying cause.
