Basic learning of tabla- kayda and the advantages of tabla

Tabla is an integral part of the Hindustani classical music. It is either played solo or in combination with other instruments to create a beautiful music. It is also played in devotional songs of Sikhism and Hinduism. Kathak dancers also uses table in their performance. Many folk singers in Bangladesh, India use table during their stage performance. The word had its origin from the word tabla, which means drum in Arabic. The playing technique is complex and requires a lot of effort to learn it. there are many tabla teacher in Kolkata who will teach you the extensive use of fingers along with the bols of the tabla.


Kayda of tabla


Kyada is a type of composition of tabla. It comprises of two types of compositions, fixed and modified. Fixed is the one which is pre-composed and modified one is improvised at the time of practicing. The word Kayda in Arabic means rules. It may be complex to play it, but one must the bols in original theme. It involves the Dayan (the right table) and the Bayan (left table) are played in a synchronized way to create a kayda.

The basic composition of a Kayda is-:


· Mukh -it is the basic bol which means the face of the Kyada. The bols of the Kyada’s are structured out of Mukh.


· Dohara- it is the repetition of Mukhfor 3 times.


· AdhaDohara- it is the repetition of the first bol of the Mukh


· Vishram- it means to take rest between the bols


· AdhaVishram- it means to take pause again that was taken in Vishram.


· Palta- it is a combination of various bols but these are formed from the Mukh. The previous composition cannot be reapeated. Palta means section.


·Tihai- it is the musical phrase which is sung three times to arrive at the Sam.
