New data protection laws could hit companies like WhatsApp.

WhatsApp may not be as secure as you think...

Messaging app WhatsApp has announced it will start sharing user data with parent company Facebook starting this week.

The move has attracted strong criticism from many technology publications and users, who fear Facebook's "questionable" track record on user privacy.

WhatsApp has said the change will help to fight spam and improve users' experiences of its service, but it has been widely condemned by those who believe WhatsApp should remain independent from Facebook.

The news comes at a difficult time for the social network, which is facing scrutiny from governments following allegations that pro-Trump data consulting firm Cambridge Analytica harvested personal information from 50 million Facebook users without their knowledge.

WhatsApp Plus has insisted the change in policy will not affect how people use its service, and says it is still possible to opt out of sharing information with Facebook by following a few steps in the app's settings menu.
