A Guide to Choosing Baby Bath Toys

Bath time with your baby can be both fun and challenging. Some babies take to the water like fish and do not want to leave their tubs. They can keep splashing water, wiggling and giggling in their tubs. While other babies may start crying the moment they see you preparing the bath. As a parent, you need to turn bath time into a fun time so that your baby starts enjoying their bath. Toys can be the best tool to turn bath time into play and fun time.

There are various kinds of bath toys available in the market. It is often overwhelming to select from the wide range of options available. They are available in so many shapes, sizes, designs and budgets that it is indeed confusing to select. To help you, here is a complete guide to choosing the best bath toy for your baby.

Material

Bath toys are available in various materials. They are available in wooden, plastic, silicone, fabric, sponge and rubber. Plastic toys often look beautiful and come at a cheaper price. However, certain plastics contain toxic elements that can cause harm to your baby. Babies tend to put everything in their mouths. While buying plastic bath toys, always buy new toys that have the label “phthalate-free”, “BPA free” or “PVC free”. Also, avoid buying plastic toys that have the recycling code #3, #6 or #7. Preferably, buy soft rubber toys that do not contain any toxic material. Sponge and wooden toys are also good options.

Type

The type of bath toy that you choose will have a direct impact on your child’s development. Therefore, you may choose toys that have some educational benefits. A ball or spherical toy can help to improve your child’s hand and eye coordination. Choosing toys in the shapes of alphabets or numbers can help them learn easily and improve their cognitive skills. Squeaky bath toys create sound stimulation for the baby which enhances their alertness. Squeaky toy balls are an excellent choice to improve both their coordination and motion skills. Rubber ducks are also a popular choice. They float on the water, are yellow in colour and make a squeaky noise when squeezed. Most of them are made of non-toxic materials and pose no choking hazard.

Water Proof

If the bath toy stays wet for a long duration then chances are that it would gather mold. Avoid hollow toys or toys that have nooks and crannies. These parts usually do not dry easily and remain damp. Chances are that mold and bacteria will start growing in these areas. Select a material that has low water retention. This is the reason fabric toys are not preferred bath toys.

Color

Babies love bright colors. If you want to attract your baby towards the bathtub then fill it up with toys in attractive colors. Your baby is not going to play with toys that have dull colors. Bath toys are available in shapes of animals, alphabets, numbers, birds, dinosaurs etc. in different colors. Choose the ones that your baby prefers. Always buy age-appropriate toys.
