How to Calculate Power Consumption

To calculate an appliance's power consumption, multiply its wattage by the number of hours it is in use (operational hours). For example, a 1000 watt electric iron running for one hour will use 1000 watt hour (kWh) of electricity.

Things To Know Before Calculating Power Consumption Of An Any Appliance:

  1. Wattage of the Appliance: Wattage refers to the appliance's rated power. The wattage of an LED TV, for example, can range from 50 to 200 watts. Wattage is a measurement of how quickly an appliance consumes electricity.
  2. A 50 watt television, in the example above, will not consume 50 units of electricity; instead, it will consume 50 watts per hour of electricity.
  3. Hours of Operation: The number of hours a device is operational is referred to as operational hours. The operational hours, for example, are 5 hours if you want to measure how much power your ceiling fan uses in 5 hours.
  4. Kilowatt Hours (kWh) are a unit of measurement for the amount of energy The unit of power is kilowatt hours (kWh). This is the figure we'd like to give our electricity provider.
