Winter Olympics, D

ay One Setup

The first day begins with a pair of semifinal races in men’s slopestyle, a new snowboarding event, beginning at 12:30 am eastern time. The finals are raced later in the morning around 7:30. NBC wont show this event until their network coverage Saturday night, more than 12 hours after the gold medal is awarded. What’s the alternative? Everything is live streamed on NBC’s Olympic website. They also offer full replays, although in the past they haven’t offered these immediately for the events they’re saving for prime time. And it’s always tricky to access their video section without the results being spoiled if you’re a traditional no spoiler type of sports fan.

Hopefully, you have access to Canada’s CBC. They regained their country’s Olympic coverage and they’re offering pretty much 15 straight hours of live coverage from midnight to 3pm every day of the Games. My local cable company actually offers this channel. I’ll probably wear out my DVR taping their overnight shows to watch in the morning, if only to catch legit, non edited coverage of the skiing and snowboarding races. Those wont be seen at all on NBC until much later at night. Regardless of what channel we’re getting sucked into, all our eyes will be on the teams for the USA, Canada and Norway. We took the Overs on gold medals won by all three countries. Nothing like channeling your inner degenerate by gambling on the Olympics. I assume that’s why they’ve been stages these things all these years. Five gold medals will be awarded during this first full day. In four of those events, we have a great shot at drawing first blood on those props. Here are the other relevant odds for those events today.

Women’s Hockey

Before getting to the individual events, we have to mention the women’s hockey tournament starts. And with it, some of the craziest hockey odds you might ever see. Team USA opens with Finland in a game that also doubles as the kickoff of NBC’s coverage. The game will be live at 3 am on NBCSN. The US is favored by 4.5 goals. That’s nothing compared to Canada. They open with the Swiss in a game that will be on MSNBC and CBC. You wont believe the spread for this game. Team Canada is favored by 9.5 goals. Honestly, good luck to you if you have the stones to take those goals with Switzerland. Canada might win this by a touchdown, a field goal and a pair of rogues…….

Men’s Snowboarding, Slopestyle

We have a Canadian favorite in this event in Maxence Parrot. He’s -140 to take the gold and comes in with the momentum of having won this event at the X-Games last month. He, and seven others, took advantage of early qualifying and have already advanced into the finals later this morning. His teammate at 8/1 shot Mark McNorris didnt and has to advance through the semifinal round first. He also took a shot at the judges after qualifications on Thursday, so we’ve got that added drama to track. Norway’s Staale Sandbech is the rising star in this sport. He’s already in the finals and a +750 to win this event. Going by the odds, the only threat to either Canadian or Norwegian gold is Finland’s Rooope Tonteri, whose +550 odds actually make him the next favorite after Parrot. Those four are the only boarders whose odds are shorter than 14/1 to win the gold

WOMENS 7.5 K CROSS COUNTRY SKIATHLON

The first of two live events that NBCSN will broadcast Saturday morning between the US women’s hockey game and the beginning of their figure skating coverage at 10. This race starts around 5 am, so it’ll likely be joined in progress after the hockey game ends. Looking at these odds, we’d better be adding a tally to our Norway total. We have a pricey -200 chalk in Bjorgen and the only other contender with less than 5/1 odds in Johaug. Four Americans are in this event, but none have any odds available. We hope they have personal bests, but we’re here for the Norwegian skiers.

Marjit Bjorgen, Norway,  -200

Therese Johaug, Norway, +190

Charlotte Kalla, Sweden, +550

Justyn Kowalczyk, Poland, +1400

Kristin Steira, Norway, +3000

Yulia Tchekaleva, Russia, +3000

Heidi Weng, Norway, +3000

Astri Jacobsen, +3000

Denise Herrmann, +5000

Krista Lahteenmaki, Finland, +5000

MENS 5,000 METER SPEED SKATE

The second event live on NBCSN, starting around 6:30 in the morning. It also showcases one of the heaviest chalks in all of the Olympic games during the first skate. Holland’s Sven Kramer is -700 to win gold. And why not? He’s only won the last two world championships and is defending Olympic Champion. Oh, and nobody beat him in this event during the last World Cup season. The only favorite more chalkier than Kramer in the entire Olympiad is the Norwegian cross country relay team, which is being listed at Bovada at -1200. Possible upset bids could come from his countryman Bergsma, runner-up in the 2013 worlds; the Russian Skobrev, bronze medalist in Vancouver and in the 2012 worlds; or South Korean Lee, a silver medalist at the worlds two years ago. American Jonathan Kuck won bronze in that same event and is a 50/1 longshot to win today.

Sven Kramer, 1/7

Jorrit Bergsma, 5/1

Ivan Skobrev, 8/1

Seung-Hoon Lee, 16/1

Jan Blokhuijsen, 20/1

Bart Springs, 40/1

Sverre Lunde Pederson, 40/1

Jonathan Kuck, 50/1

Denis Yuskow, 50/1

Mens Biathlon 10K

#GoNorway #BeatFrance Fourcade of France might be the betting chalk, but it’s slight over Norwegian Hegle-Svendsen. And then the next three challengers per the odds are all from Norway. Everybody else has odds at 30/1 or longer. If you want to play any of them, go to Bovada and pick a name out of the hat. Otherwise it’s four Norwegians against one Frenchman in this ski.

Martin Fourcade, France, +180

Emil Hegle Svendsen, Norway, +200.Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, Norway, +900

Tarjei Boe, Norway, +1400

Johannes T Boe,  Norway, +1500

 Women’s Freestyle, Moguls

With American and defending Olympic Champ Kearney as the favorite and a pair of top Canadian challengers, we expect to scratch one for one of those over plays. Kearney is a pretty solid favorite. The Canadian challengers are an interesting story in that they’re sisters. A third Dufour-Lapointe also qualified, but Maxime at 25/1 is a darkhorse, at best, to take gold. It’s also an interesting contrast in TV coverage. NBC will be showing the event only in tape delay during their evening show on the network. The CBC will be broadcasting it live starting just after noon as the exclamation point t0 their first day of live coverage.
