Reasons Why a Man Can Wear a Skirt?

Beyond all prejudice, the use of the skirt, as has happened with other garments, should be considered something completely universal

From some characters from the endearing Asterix cartoon to William McDougal, better known as Willie "the gardener" in The Simpsons, men in a skirt have been with us for years. However, his image was a caricature of Scottish masculinity, the one that created the ancient custom of dressing men in tartan-patterned tunics that, as if they were coats of arms, indicate which clan or family each person belongs to. Baptized under the name of kilt, this long tunic gradually became the skirt that today is an irrefutable hallmark of Scottish traditions.

The fustanella in different regions of the Balkan peninsula and the African sarong are, together with the kilt, other examples of men wearing skirts without any prejudice, since these pendas confer status, honor and manhood to those who use them. However, the problem with men wearing something other than pants comes from regions that, ironically, take a much more open view of any type of social manifestation.

Lawmakers in Tamil Nadi, India, protesting against dress codes that require men to shed traditional sarongs for pants.

Following a Westernized view, skirts for men are nothing more than an emasculating situation. Yes, because apparently, under the judicious gaze of some people, the fact that a pair of pants hang from your waist is a sign that you are a woman and that you assume yourself as such. Let's think that if Coco Channel was able to bring the comfort of men's clothing to a women's wardrobe, this had to happen at some point - or happen again, if we go back to the prehistoric origins of skirts - with many other garments that are they think exclusively of women.

This, however, is not a discourse that demands equality. It would be absurd for a handful of men, at this point in history, to suddenly feel that they need more rights than they already have. Let's put it this way: it's just a text in pursuit of the comfort and safety that this garment confers, which began to gain strength in the 1990s, becoming an icon of the counterculture with Jonathan Davis at the helm. Although before the Korn vocalist used kilts to overcome the fear caused by standing in front of an audience and to remember, as he later said, his Scottish roots; punk had already added skirts to the clothing of their relatives for some years.

Added to tradition, freedom and security is perhaps the most powerful reason for wearing a skirt: comfort in the broad sense of the word. All the reasons fit in those nine letters, like makeup, skirts and any garment that "represents a gender" deserves and needs an urgent claim. The idea that a skirt is a garment that has the power to turn you into a woman should be left behind as it happened with pants, blazers and countless other what we now call wardrobe staples. The reason for all this could be a simple "just because" and everything would be perfectly covered.

This debate is no more important, and men in many regions and countries are wearing different kinds of kilts such as denim kilt, hybrid kilt, utility kilts, modern kilts and others. Men kilts are now trendy.
