Four Excellent DIY Remedies For Cleaning Upholstery Stains

Is there someone in your family who suffers from severe allergies that seem to worsen when they are indoors? It's a possibility that you have irritants like dust mites trapped in your upholstery, which is causing them to react! Unfortunately, upholstery can become a natural habitat for these microscopic creatures, especially if you don't clean it thoroughly every now and then. Furthermore, we all know that areas like the sofa are susceptible to stains and trapped odours that are unpleasant to see and smell. At the same time, it is highly recommended that you hire professional house cleaners like Lounge Master on a regular basis to perform deep cleaning. Meanwhile, if you wish to go DIY, we’ve written some excellent homemade upholstery cleaning remedies that will provide a nice touch-up to freshen your upholstery. Continue reading to learn more about a few do-it-yourself upholstery cleaning tips!

The Rubbing Alcohol Combination

For this combination, you will need rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, and clean water. For easy application, we recommend mixing it in a spray bottle. Start with combining 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol, 1/2 cup white vinegar, and about 1 cup water in a mixing bowl. Before applying it to your upholstery, give it a good shake. If you're dealing with tough stains, you can use a more concentrated solution with a little less water. If the fabrics in your couch or sofa are delicate, you can dilute the solution with more water. Spray the solution on your upholstery and let it sit for about two minutes. Then scrub it with a circular movement using a microfiber cloth. Allow the upholstery to dry naturally.

The Laundry Detergent Combination

If you don't have any rubbing alcohol available, we have this second solution that can work wonders and uses a product you almost certainly have on hand; laundry detergent! This solution performs best when mixed in a bowl rather than a spray bottle. You will have to mix 2 tablespoons of laundry detergent, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, 2 tablespoons baking soda, and 2 cups warm water if you don't have baking soda, that's completely fine; however, it’s recommended to include baking soda as it is excellent at neutralising odours! Dip your microfiber cloth directly into the solution and rub it in a circular motion into your upholstery. Allow the upholstery to dry naturally.

Baking Soda Paste for Difficult Stains

If you have deep, dark stains on your upholstery, try treating it with some baking soda paste. To make the paste, you will have to pour 1/2 cup baking soda into a bowl to make your paste. Add a few teaspoons of water to the bowl and finely mix everything. Continue to add teaspoons of water until you have a thick but spreadable paste. Baking soda is an all-purpose cleaner because it is a mild alkali that penetrates grease and grime and breaks down their molecules. To get the best results from your baking soda paste, apply a generous amount to upholstery stains and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, using your microfiber cloth, begin scrubbing it into the affected area. To remove the paste, use either of the above solutions and clean as directed. Then, allow the upholstery to air dry.

Essential Oils to Add a Fresh Smell

Ingredients like rubbing alcohol and white vinegar have an irritating odour that many people may dislike. It's worth noting that both of these scents will fade after a few days, carrying any funky odours with them. However, there are a few essential oils that you can add to your DIY upholstery cleaning remedies to give them a nice smell right away. Citrus oils are always a good choice because they smell great and have antibacterial properties. If you prefer a citrus scent, we recommend lemon or orange. Consider using lavender essential oils if you want something soothing. Rosemary and lemongrass are also excellent additions to your solution.

To Wrap Up:

By using these simple remedies, you can clean your upholstery and get rid of stains within no time. However, it is still recommended that you hire professionals for the best results. If you think that you won’t be able to do the cleaning on your own or you need a hand with it, you can hire professional upholstery cleaning services in Manly. Lounge Master is always a call away.
