Refugee Health - US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants

USCRI's Refugee Mental Health Services was established in 2017 to support and develop health and wellness programs for refugees.

Health promotion is an important part of resettlement. To be successful at school or work, you need to take care of your health. Parents need to take care of their own health so they can help their children succeed. USCRI helps refugees and other eligible groups build a strong foundation for a healthy start through its medical screening program.

Through the Medical Screening Program, refugees and other eligible groups in Texas and Missouri receive a comprehensive medical examination immediately upon arrival in the United States or upon becoming eligible. Some people refer to the physical examination as a "home health assessment." During the physical exam, doctors may ask about the patient's nutritional status, reproductive health, mental health, dental health, hearing, and vision. A doctor may also order some laboratory work to test for certain health conditions. Doctors may give patients medication when needed.

In 2018, RHS launched a mental health awareness training program. Through this program, USCRI and afghan refugees Texas works with local immigrant and refugee groups to raise awareness about mental health and available resources.
