The Role of Ambulatory Surgery Centers

Ambulatory Surgery Centers are, also known as ASCs, are medical facilities that will provide you with same-day surgical care or outpatient surgical treatments. In this treatment, the patient doesn't need to get admission to any hospital and is accessible or able to go back home once the treatment is over.

According to stats, there were only 275 ambulatory surgery centers around 1980-1984 in the United States. But this number rapidly increased and changed to 5,300 till 2008. This shows the surgery centers development, and it helped the people of the United States.

Background

A group of anesthesiologists was the ambulatory surgery center developer. The first ambulatory surgical center was started in 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona. But after that, around the 1980s, their numbers started expanding, and these centers started getting more and more popular; this was because, in this period, there was also a fast growth in accreditation programs. One more significant reason for ASCs development was government approvals. And ASCs became more trustworthy when in 1982, the procedures performed in the ASCs were made eligible for the Medicare payment, which means that it was proved that they were low-risk surgeries provided in fewer expenses.

Most of the ASCs are recognized by the ownership, and about 50 percent of the ASCs are in the hand investor-owned businesses. And in the rest of the part, some of them are owned by hospitals while physicians own others.

Patient treatment

Patients at ASCs are asked to follow some precautions and steps that regular hospital patients do. They are asked to avoid eating or drinking anything before the procedure and are also asked to have someone with them who can drive them to the hospital. Patients leave the hospital within two hours after the treatment is over. They are allowed to go home only when they will we'll enough to do so, and if any patient needs extra care that is a little serious, they are transferred to the nearby hospital.

Advantages

There has been tremendous surgery center development in the last few years, and here are some advantages of ASCs.

  1. Expenses- In many cases, it has been found that the procedures done at ASCs cost just one-third of the cost of the same procedure done at regular hospitals.

  1. Comfort- This has been observed that there is less administrative paperwork at ASCs than the regular hospitals. Patients also like that they can be free after 2 hours of their surgery and continue their lives as usual very soon.

  1. Presence of their family- People feel comfortable with their loved ones. In ASCs, you are free to spend your recovery time with your loved one in the waiting area, and you don't have to be in a room alone thinking and praying to recover fast.

Conclusion

We accept that ASCs are cheap, but they can often cost the price compared to the regular hospital, and hence we recommend you carefully calculate the expenses. ASCs are the best surgery option if you don't want to disturb your work and get well soon.
