Learn about the 3 stages of alcoholism, and how to stop the progression of the disease. To better understand alcohol use disorder, it's broken into three stages. By doing so it helps people understand how alcoholism progresses as time passes. At some point, AUD will need to be addressed and treated in order to achieve sobriety.


What are the 3 Stages of Alcoholism?


  1. Early stage. When the body starts to adapt to alcohol dependence and the increased drinking
  2. Chronic stage. Brain becomes altered and the person now has alcohol cravings. Withdrawal symptoms occur once the alcohol wears off.
  3. End stage. Compulsive drinking, at this point the alcoholic is drinking at all hours of the day to stave off withdrawals. At this point the alcoholic has suffered severe consequences in relationships, work, health.
