De Quervain Syndrome, also known as Texting Tenosynovitis, is a medical condition that affects the muscles on the thumb side of the wrist. De Quervain Syndrome is caused by events that involve repetitive hand movement – such as lifting weight, texting, or gaming.
Symptoms
Pain or swelling at the base of the thumb
The problem in moving the wrist and thumb
A "stop-and-go" feeling when moving the thumb
Spasms in the hand
Burning feeling on the thumb side of the wrist
Risk Factors
De Quervain syndrome is more commonly found in women
This medical condition occurs during or after pregnancy because of hormonal changes, fluid retention
and lifting.
People aged 30-50 are likely to develop de Quervain syndrome, but adolescents are frequently diagnosed due to excessive phone usage.
Participating in activities that require repetitive hand or wrist movement.
Those who spend countless hours texting are prone to pain on the thumb side of the wrist. However, any wrist movement results in a painful condition. In addition, activities like tennis and golf, playing the piano, and carpentry also result in the disease.
Treatments
Everybody is different, and so is the Texting Tenosynovitis treatment. But the aim of treating De Quervain Syndrome is the same: reduction of irritation, prevention of reappearance, and preservation of motion. The most common treatments include:
Medication to reduce pain and swelling
Hand Therapy
Applying ice
Immobilizing the affected thumb using De Quervain's Wand and Tape to keep them straight and rest the muscles
The number one treatment for "texting thumb" is reducing phone usage! So take a break from texting except necessary.
