Choosing Materials for Sheet Metal Stamping

While almost all metals can technically be used for sheet metal stamping, some are much better than others for specific applications. If you are trying to decide which type of material will be best for your sheet metal stamping project, take some time to learn a bit about the benefits and drawbacks of each metal you consider.

Steel Alloys

Steel alloys are a very popular material choice for a lot of sheet metal stamping projects, due in large part to their strength and versatility. Some steel alloys, like stainless steel, are inherently corrosion resistant, though some other steel alloys are not, and need to be galvanized or otherwise coated to avoid corrosion damage. Though the hefty weight of the average steel alloy can be a drawback for some applications, they are generally a great material choice when sturdiness is required. Steel alloys also tend to be quite cost-effective.

Copper Alloys

Copper alloys are also commonly used for sheet metal stamping projects. Copper alloys have a long list of desirable properties. They are corrosion resistant, highly ductile, they provide both thermal and electrical conductivity, they are capable of withstanding exposure to the elements (both high and low temperatures), they are easy to sanitize, and they are often quite aesthetically appealing. However, they are rather soft, so they are more suited to delicate applications than they are to strength-based applications.

Aluminum Alloys

Aluminum alloys are both strong and lightweight, which makes them an excellent choice for all kinds of sheet metal stamping projects. Like steel alloys, aluminum alloys are versatile and durable. Like copper alloys, aluminum alloys are conductive, malleable, and corrosion resistant. Though aluminum alloys are often more expensive than steel alloys, they can offer a great deal of long-term value, which may make them a worthwhile investment for certain applications.

Sheet metal stamping is a process that can be customized to meet a vast range of needs. Choose your materials carefully to ensure the best results for your project.
