"Military Exercise and Peace" -Not by Tolstoy

New Year, New Crisis

By the time my article is published, a new war is being fought for about a month on the European soil. The conflict beetwen Russia and Ukraine has shook the entire world. We, the people hoped that war and invasion is finally becoming an outdated idea, but history seems to reapeat itself once again. The current conflict had sparked the tought within me to write the idea and expand my curiosity, regarding wars and human behivour. Is war in our DNA? Is it a man made idea? Let's dive into its roots.

Are Humans Violent By Nature?

Throughout human history, conflicts plagued our existence. At first we fought for food and other resources, but as our culture and way of life changed, so did our wars. Humanity went from using tools made out of rocks and wood, to weapons of mass destruction in never seen scales before. We only have to look back on history to decide, whether we are violent by nature or not. What should this shocking "revalation" tell us? It is quite hard to escape the fact, that our past is stained with our own blood.

What is The Psychology of War?

To explain, what seems to be unexplainable, it is a good start to look for the answers in Psychology. It is the field, that deals with human behaviour after all. In the seminal essay of William James, titled as "The Moral Equivalent of War" he suggests some ideas of how we fall into this never ending cycle of doom.

  • "The war effort": If there is a genuine cause or if the propaganda works its wonders, war seems to unite people. A nation, facing a common enemy is what inspires its people to act more bravely, more honorable and to be more un-selfish. In the words of James it "redeems life from flat degeneration." It gives purpose to the confused, a clear goal to the lost. This specially applys to the group, that is most likely to fight in wars. A group, that I belong to. Young men.
  • Pride and belonging: Us humans, we have a strong sense of belonging. This can range from relegion to ethnicity. We want to feel the pride of serving something bigger than us. A cause that we believe is for the better. I, for one, think most conflicts nowadays spark from too much pride and thinking one group is superior to the oher.

In the end, unless we're discussing defending ourselves from tyranny, it all comes down to human greed ,hurtful pride and ego.

When will we learn from history?

When I say learn, I do mean it. It is time we actually keep in mind our past and act according to it. Too often, history seems to repeat itself and the ones left to do the thinking are the grieving ones, who were waiting for a person, that never came back. I understand very well, that war is something, that could never be escaped. Altough, major warfare is on the decline since the second world war, this current conflict on the eastern side of Europe gives us an unpleasent deja vu from history. I hope there will be no further escalation of this war and the lifes of the affected ones will continue soon enough

How Can We Help?

There are a couple of ways we can help those in need in these trying times. We can always give to charitys, spread awarness or help the refugees at shelters. Our "War Effort" should be helping those in need now and finally putting an end to this nonsense of a conflict. Below this article, there are links that will lead to sites, thats sole purpose is helping the future or the current victims of war
