Best Places to See Exotic Animals in Costa Rica

Thanks to its geographical location, its tropical climate, and the protection of about 25% of its natural habitat, Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. This small country is home to 5% of existing species in the world. So, when you are in Costa Rica, you have lots of opportunities to see a wide variety of exciting wildlife that you can only expect to see in this country.

The following are the best places to see exotic animals in Costa Rica:

1.   Santa Rosa National Park

Santa Rosa National Park is one of the last remaining and the largest stands of tropical dry forest in Costa Rica. It is a great place for all kinds of wildlife viewing, from over three types of monkeys to over 100 species of bats. The sparse foliage, particularly during the dry season, makes exotic animal viewing that much easier.

2.   Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

There is something both majestic and eerie about walking around in the early-morning mist to the sound of lizards skittering and birds calling through the leaves, fully surrounded by tall trees heavy with vines, moss, orchids, and bromeliads. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve has a well-maintained network of trails.

3.   The Río Sarapiquí Region

From the Caribbean coastal lowlands up into the central mountains, the protected tropical forests allow you to see a plethora of ecosystems and life zones. There are several private reserves in the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Here, you will find a wide range of ecolodges to suit your preferences and budget.

4.   Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park is the perfect spot for monkeying around. This amazing park is one of the best places in Costa Rica to see a wide variety of exotic animals, particularly monkeys, including the rare squirrel monkey. When taking a walk to see these nosy white-faced capuchins, it is recommended that you keep your backpack snacks away for obvious reasons.

5.   Osa Peninsula

Osa Peninsula is the country’s most biologically rich and remote region. Corcovado National Park that takes up most of the Osa Peninsula, is the largest remaining patch of virgin lowland tropical rainforest in Latin America. Scarlet macaws, tapirs, crocodiles, and jaguars all call this place home.

6.   Tortuguero

Since Tortuguero is laced with canals and transportation by boat, Tortuguero has been called the Venice of Costa Rica. However, in Tortuguero, you will feel more like you are floating down the brown, wild Amazon. You will see a wide range of aquatic birds, three types of monkeys, as well as sloths, and caimans when exploring these narrow canals. You can even enjoy the amazing sight of green turtles laying their eggs if you visit between June and October. This is because the beaches here are the largest nesting site for these endangered giants.

Visiting Costa Rica is as exotic as it gets. The country is exploding with exotic animals and unique life forms and there are plenty of places you can visit in order to see them in their glory.
