Product Design Sketching: complete beginners guide

Sketching for industrial/product design

There are many similarities between designing a product and manufacturing an automobile. Depending on your perspective, you can see it as a functional machine or sculptural piece.

Sketching by hand is a common first step in the design process. You're free to experiment with more sculptural and minimalistic drawing styles when you're at this stage. An eye and a hand must be coordinated to create a solid and memorable design. To do this, the primary goal is to produce a clear and concise drawing pattern that can be transferred into reality without losing its visual attractiveness.

Considering technology, materials, and assembly should be a priority throughout the whole design process. It's a lot like designing an automobile. There is a limit to what you can do in every firm, and you must abide by it. Understanding how things work can help you build a strong portfolio and a successful career as a student.

Product Design Sketching for Beginners

Hand Mixer

1.     To begin, sketch out a preliminary idea. Look for a gentle, balanced contour by loosening up your lines. Use a paths editor to create correct paths for the main lines. Please keep them all in one layer to make the entire procedure more accessible.

2.     Colour the main body and the details in flat tones. To make a selection, click anywhere along the path's outline. After that, choose the handle-defining methods by clicking on them and pressing the subtract from selection button. Use a primer colour to coat the form. The stem and the top button should be painted the same way. Define the smooth surfacing with subtle shadows.

3.     Use dark brown, pale orange, and white values to achieve brass or copper material. It's best to do it without thinking about the shape. When producing highlights and deep shadows, think about how the light impacts the surface.

4.     After deciding to add additional contrast to the sketch, to accentuate the oval features, use black colour and a few grey shadows.

5.     Add an eye-catching accent to the mixer's lid. Use the white form, lower the transparency, and delete the boundaries. Make a rectangular selection and paint it in contrasting colours to get the shiny effect. Apply dark brown and bright yellow to replicate the whiskers' inner reflection. To build the cylinder, stretch the rectangular in the y-direction while de-selecting the layer with Ctrl+T. Create holders for the whiskers and wire connectors using the same method.

6.     Using a rough sketch, erase the previous layer. Add a dash of colour to the copper accents. Make a combined layer by pressing CTlr+Shift+Alt+E on the top layer. Use the warp tool to change the copper handle's interior composition. Try to elongate it to fit the context better. Use a wire and black or white outlines to draw attention to the design. Make sure you pay attention to the speed button and any cooling components. If required, adjust the colour and contrast.
