What are hurricane shutters made of?

Hurricane shutters have to be strong, durable and impact resistant. They have to withstand the impact of both flying objects/debris and sustained wind gusts. They need to create an impact resistant barrier between your windows, doors, screens, etc and the potentially damaging objects flying around. In other words, hurricane shutters are made from seriously tough materials.

In general, solid structure storm shutters are made from metal, aluminum, polycarbonate or other impact resistant plastics. Fabric based panels and screens are made from high strength fabrics such as Dupont™ Kevlar ® or similar materials.

Of course the materials, and quality of materials will vary from one hurricane shutter supplier to another. Hurricane shutter companies like Eurex Shutters install hurricane shutters made with high quality materials. Other suppliers, such as big box stores may or may not be as high quality in order to keep prices low. It is always a good idea to ask what materials the shutters are made from along with the passed tests, standards and certifications the shutter products have. These are especially important in Florida with the stringent building codes.
