It is no secret that the world of technology has taken over. With just a few taps of a screen, we can be transported into another realm where anything and everything is possible. While this may be true for adults, it is especially relevant for kids who are growing up with devices in hand and Netflix at their fingertips. The problem with this, however, is that as digital natives they are losing the ability to read and write proficiently. This is because when all we do is watch videos or scroll through social media feeds, we're not actually using our brains to process information; we're doing something called "screen time multitasking."


In many learning situations, teachers and students use a mix of both reading and watching videos. One study examined children's screen time and found that the amount of time spent on digital devices tended to decrease student academic performance. This was in direct contrast to the number of hours spent reading and writing when children read the text in books.


The study also found that watching videos led to lower standardized test scores. While reading and watching videos have different cognitive benefits, both are forms of passive learning. While watching a video does not require active interpretation or high alert senses, reading engages our cognitive systems and provides objective, descriptive information. While videos may present an opinion, reading is the most effective method for learning. While a video may be objective, its message is left to the viewer. As a result, it is not the best method for students to learn new things.


While many people may prefer watching videos over reading books, the researchers concluded that the benefits of reading and writing are similar in some ways. According to the research, children spend five hours a day outside of school working on digital media. As a result, these students are not developing good reading habits. This is a sign that these technologies are not conducive to the development of reading and writing skills. In this hurried world, parents need to focus on special writing skills i.e. essay and dissertation writing, summary writing, daily diary writing and other small practice that will enhance their writing skills.
