Ninh Binh: A Nature Lovers Dream

The province of Ninh Binh is roughly 100km (60 miles) from Hanoi. You can reach Ninh Binh by motorbike but the easiest way to get to there is to take a train from Hanoi itself, the trains are inexpensive and if you opt for the soft seats (which I definitely recommend because the hard seats are just wooden benches) the trip is quite comfortable. The train trip itself only takes about 2 hours. Now if you ask anyone who has visited the province they would tell you that the city of Ninh Binh itself is quite unremarkable, and I agree, but if you travel 10 minutes outside of town you will find some truly breathtaking views. Ninh Binh is sometimes referred to as The Ha Long bay of the mainland and just a glance at the scenery explains why. Ninh Binh offers pristine nature and lush jungles that look like they were ripped straight out of a movie. At any given time you will almost certainly be surrounded by massive limestone mountains on either side.

There are various attractions that make the region. A must see but the most popular is the Trang An landscape complex which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Trang An is explored by taking a kayak trip along the river, the tour takes between 2 and 3 hours and it is well worth the time. Around every bend, you'll find picturesque scenes that are simply breathtaking. Trang An is by far the most popular attraction to the area but the province has many other sights and experiences to offer.

Ninh Binh has even more to offer than its amazing views and breathtaking vistas. The region is home to its own unique dishes and culture. The first thing you'll notice when you first visit the countryside is the abundance of mountain goats peppered along the landscape. It's almost more common to be woken up in the morning by bleating of goats than by clucking of a Rooster. These goats are considered a delicacy in the region and almost all of the restaurants serve a goat dish. Almost all your favorite Vietnamese dishes are offered with a choice of goat meat, such as the ever popular pho.

Out of all the attractions Ninh Binh has to offer Cuc Phuong National Park was by far my favorite. There are various ways of reaching the park but the best and the most enjoyable is by motorbike. The park is roughly an hours drive from Ninh Binh city but it is worth the effort. Driving to the park awards you with beautiful views and taking a bus just doesn't do the drive justice. One can spend an entire day in the park as it has numerous activities such as hiking trails, botanical gardens and a primate rescue center you can visit. The trekking is what I enjoyed the most at Cuc Phuong National Park. The most popular trail is one that leads you to a thousand-year-old tree, the trail takes about 2 hours and is worth every minute of it.

So in conclusion if you enjoy amazing views, great food, and unforgettable experiences then Ninh Binh should be on the top of the list of places you want to visit.
