Paranormal vs. Horror: What's the Difference?

Hello everybody! I hope that your week is going smoothly. If you've been on my social media, you'll know that I've discussed this earlier during the week. I'm by no way a horror paranormal author or reader. However, that doesn't mean I'm not interested in the genres, and what distinguishes them. I often get confused by what the difference is between horror and paranormal.

I am not fully immersed in the genres, I asked a few of my writing and author friends with a solid understanding of the genres, about what the difference is. I received a variety of fascinating and insightful responses. Continue reading to find out the difference between the supernatural and the real in horror and horror fiction with me!

What do the authors have to say about the difference between Paranormal and Horror?

I often consider horror to be more grounded in reality , such as serial killers and such. Paranormal contains more supernatural elements like ghosts, spirits, demonic entities and so on. ." LALA LEEO and the AUTHOR

The Horror genre was specifically created to keep the emotional needs of the audience in the mind. It's purposely designed to be terrifying and frightening. That's the motivation behind it a horror film, even though there's no supernatural elements. The inclusion of paranormal elements makes the story supernatural. It could be a paranormal thriller, a love story that is paranormal or a thriller, adventure, or of any type. The reason they are mixed is the fact that when some of the first novels in the genres were written , like Frankenstein or Dracula the paranormal was only described as terrifying stories. Today, we can tell horror stories of ordinary people like Psycho or tell supernatural stories that have positive twists, like Lovely Bones." STEPHEN STEVIE COLE WRITER

"Paranormal fiction is usually regarded as an additional genre within the horror genre. However, sometimes the genre is more of a genre of fantasy." Genevieve Clovis, Writer

"Some people refer to the world of Paranormal in conjunction with paranormal romance, which I've observed." --- K. R. S. McEntire, Author

What is the difference between Horror and Paranormal?

Wow! That was very helpful. Thanks to the authors and writers! I believe I am able to figure out the an answer to the article's primary question. After doing some research and speaking with other authors, I've discovered that the distinction is. I divided it into bulleted lists of every genre in order to assist you and me get a better understanding.

Horror-Is a tale that is written to scare and/or frighten. The story is created to make you fearful. Horror:

  • Feels a sense of fear or unease
  • Incites fears in readers
  • It reads like an unreal nightmare
  • It has a fantastic ending

Paranormal includes an entity or an event which is powered by an event that is not understood.

  • Mysterious
  • Ghost ghosts, ghosts, and more ghosts
  • Life after death
  • Strange phenomena that cannot be explained by science

There are aspects of both in each kind of story, however, there is no requirement any of them to create the story. You can, for instance, write an horror story that doesn't have the ghost (Saw). But, you could also be able to tell a ghost story with being frightening (Casper)." SL. WILLIAMS WRITER, SL. WILLIAMS
