Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre

The relationship between Jane Eyre and Rochester develops when the girl starts working at his house and sees the master for the first time. Jane is confused during her first meeting with the man, and her confusion grows as she has her first conversation with him in the house. Jane has never had relations with any man and has scarcely spoken to males when she was a student. Therefore, Rochester’s attention and his mind impress her and evoke warm feelings in her. At the same time, Rochester finds in Jane the pure beauty he has been seeking in a girl. However, there are obstacles, such as his marriage, that prevent him from giving vent to his feelings to Jane. He is also scared that she could love him only for his money and title since there is a social and age divide between the two. Despite the obstacles, the couple manages to reunite: “I know no weariness of my Edward's society: he knows none of mine, any more than we each do of the pulsation of the heart that beats in our separate bosoms”.

When Rochester’s feelings to Jane develop, he wants to make Jane fall in love with him by making her jealous. Thus, he ignores her when he invites Blanche Ingram and makes Jane feel rather miserable. At the same time, he plays and hints his feelings to Jane: “'I sometimes have a queer feeling with regard to you--especially when you are near me, as now”. He pays close attention to what she does and how she behaves, and he wants her to be present so that he can see whether his plan is actually working. In the end, it does work because Jane reveals her feelings soon after the party, when she thinks that Rochester might marry Blanche, which would make her life in the house unbearable.
