This is how Instagram ranks the viewer's order of your Insta story

Whether you'll admit there is some reason behind it or not, don't publish your Instagram account without looking to see who's viewed it each half hour. What's more, how do you know how Instagram place its story users in the rankings?

It's almost impossible to let 24 hours pass and your story expire without religiously reopening the app to see if the man you're currently texting the one you don't like or trying to make jealous has viewed your latest upload.

It's not just me, or does your closest acquaintance, your brother or even the person who you're messaging not show up in your top five most watched people? My top five is one person who I haven't had a conversation with in ages, my ex-boyfriend, two girls I kinda known at uni, and a girl I have spoken five words to during my life time. I mean, how is that even possible? ?

Instagram is full of mysteries, like how to get a blue tick, what it takes to read someone's story without they seeing, and also how to actually get followers, but the viewer number on your story is among the most elusive. Therefore, we set out to figure out exactly how Instagram determines the order of the people who are viewing your story through different Insta theory of stories, as well as then find out what the most popular person in your list actually means.

How does Instagram place its story users in the top spot? The theories:The stalking theory

There are several theories being discussed on the internet. In the course of an analysis, a Reddit user posted on this thread that the most influential people are the ones who follow your Instagram most. These users don't even need to interact with your content via comments or likes in order to be a part of your audience, so long as they visit your account frequently enough, they'll always be first.

The top 50 theory

Some believe that the order of viewers is chronological for the first 50 viewers, so the order of your viewers will reveal the viewers who tuned in to your story first. However, once you reach 50 viewers, the algorithm changes...

...followed by a different stalking theory

Then, after the initial 50 people have viewed your story, the order is then determined by who interacts with your profile the most with page views, comments, likes, story views, DMs etc.

According to this theory pages views are prioritised in this algorithm, so if you're wondering why your ex-partner who isn't interested in the photos you post on Instagram ever again keeps showing up on the top of the list, it's because he's looking for you.

Well it looks like these three individuals have been stalking me for 14 weeks.

The three signals

The Instagram's Paige Thelen, who works in Insta's tech communications team she told Social Media Week there are three criteria to determine which posts rank where, including the time of your post, your connection to the user and how much they think they'll be interested in your story. Paige explained: "Similar to the feed stories are arranged in accordance with the events you're most interested in.

"The order of posts is using a range of indicators, including: 1) the likelihood that you'll be interested in the content 2.) the timeliness of the posts; and) your connections to the person writing. The technology is powered by machine learning which is adaptive to your preferences and changes as time passes.

"Profile visits are considered, as well as likes and comments."

The bottom line is that anyone on your list of top five most likely stalks your account all the time even if they do not appreciate any of your posts or even communicate with you at all. That means that every time you upload a story it's possible to get confidence boosts from knowing the ex you adored so much still loves you, or that your 'best friend' actually is the best friend they claim it to be.
