NEW DelHI: Dholera will receive an airport soon within two years. A cabinet committee on economic affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved a proposal to upgrade phase I of the green airport at Dholera, Gujarat, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,305 crore, which must be completed within 48 months.


The airport will also cover the nearest district and will serve as the second airport to Ahmedabad, the government said in a statement. The project is being initiated by Dholera International Airport Company Limited (DIACL), JV Airports Authority of India (AAI) which will have a 51% stake in it; The Gujarat government (GoG) owns 33% shares and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) with 16% remaining shares, the statement said. “The new Greenfield Airport in Dholera is located about 50 kilometers from Ahmedabad Airport.


The airport is scheduled to operate from 2025-26 and initial passenger traffic is estimated at 3 lakh passengers per year, expected to grow to 23 lakh over a 20-year period. The annual freight is estimated at 2025-26 tons, up from 2,73,000 tons over a 20-year period, ”the statement added. Dholera Airport will receive passenger transport and goods from the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) and is expected to become a major freight forwarding center for the industrial region.
