My Bachelor Party Weekend at Jaco Beach, Costa Rica!

From the very moment she had said yes, me there on one knee in the middle of the crowded restaurant, a perfectly-sized diamond ring on her finger, my friends had begun planning the biggest day of their lives – my Bachelor Party, of course! Now in our mid-thirties, most of the boys had gotten married. Consequently, we had all attended many Bachelor Parties – Vegas, Miami, Atlantic City, Cancun – they had all been great, always a blast – but this one, mine, would be one in a whole different league. Minutes after having proposed, I got the call I had been waiting for – “Dude, we’re going to Costa Rica!”

On a cold February morning, I made my way to the airport. As I entered, I was immediately ambushed by the boys who all came out of nowhere, lifted me up and carried me all the way to the check-in counter, chanting, singing and celebrating already – we made quite the entrance! After being scolded by security, and having checked in, we made our way to our gate. Once aboard the plane, we started with the celebratory drinks. A couple of vodka-tonics, a couple of scotches on the rocks, and we were ready to go. None of us had been to Costa Rica, and hadn’t been out of the country in two years, so this was a big deal not just for me, and my Bachelor Party, but also for the boys, who all craved some serious partying. Mid-air, once the seatbelt-on sign went off, we all got up and toasted to this crazy weekend ahead of us – to Jaco Beach!

Even from the little windows of the plane, we could see the change in landscape – green, so much green. Once having exit the airport, and having entered and taken off in our van, an Air-Conditioned Mercedes Benz Sprinter, the scenic ride was out of this world. From city to mountains; from mountains to jungle; from jungle to beach – what a beautiful country this was! I felt the heat sneaking in from the windows as we approached the Pacific, in spite of the Air-Conditioning blasting all through the van – man, we were surely in the Tropics! Stepping out of the van once in Jaco, was all the proof we needed – a total shock to our systems. The heat hit us like a brick wall in immediate contrast from the icy Air-Conditioned interior of the van – and it was a beautiful, sunny, hot morning in Jaco. As we walked into the lively little town center with our designated guide, a personal Concierge that was assigned to us, she began filling us in on everything, on all the things to do in Jaco Beach – from surfing to fishing; from ziplining to river rafting; from our VIP Chefs to the many fabulous restaurants in town; from our private DJs and Bartenders to the crazy bars and clubs in town. Surely, this would be a crazy weekend!

We were all mesmerized as we stood in front of the Vacation Rental we had booked for the weekend, a huge, 15-bedroom, beachside Villa with a swimming pool and a kickass poolside deck looking out onto the beach and the ocean. Like children, we immediately dispersed into different parts of the house, running around, yelling and hollering with excitement. Hot and filled with endless energy, we all jumped into the pool – and so begun the good times. As we were cannonballing in and out of the pool, suddenly there appeared a couple of Bartenders with treys full of shots and cocktails, and a DJ started playing amazing tunes – the party had officially begun. Shots, cocktails, beers, toasts, dancing, hollering – this was a good start to our weekend! The smell of grilled meat filled the air, and that’s when we met our Personal Chefs – they were grilling up some Steaks and it smelled so damned good. Before long, we were all huddled around the Chef at the grill, making small talk and waiting for the food, almost drooling in place. The Steaks were delicious – T-Bone and Ribeye. After lunch, we went into town to see what sort of trouble we could get ourselves in! We ended up at an awesome bar called Puddlefish Brewery where we had beers, mingled with the locals and after having met a group of Canadian girls, we bought some beers and headed on to the beach. We were there messing around until sunset, which by the way was spectacular, and then went to another bar called El Point, where we shot some pool, danced to the Latin music playing just after sunset, and had some Frozen Margaritas to die for! Before I knew it, it was dinner time. The Canadian girls suggested a restaurant on the main street called Lemon Zest, and that’s where we went – I had a mouthwatering Lobster Thermador which was amazing. Our bellies full, we wondered into town to discover the legendary Jaco Beach nightlife, which by the way is thriving! We started at a bar called Orange Pub, which was a combination of a pub and club, the music drastically changing within the span of an hour, and before long we were all on the dancefloor pumping our fists to the crazy electronic music and the multi-color lasers swaying all around us. Now in the mood, we moved on to an actual nightclub, one called Republik, where we totally let loose. We got instant VIP seating at request, ordered bottle service, did some shots – and before long we were up and about dancing again. We partied like crazy, met new friends, and then it was morning – incredible! What a night!

The next morning, we woke up early and headed right out with our Concierge – we had booked an Adventure Tour, White Water Rafting, and boy, were we excited. Oh man, crashing through those intense, hostile waters of the river, surrounded by rainforest – it was quite the adventure! Safe to say, any lingering hint of a hangover had up and gone after the ride was over! Refreshed, we went back into town, visited a restaurant called Green Room for brunch. I ordered a Mimosa and Eggs Benedict – delicious! One Mimosa turned to two, two Mimosas turned to beers, and then we found ourselves back on the beach. We took on the task of learning how to surf, and man, a hard task at that! After falling off the board a dozen times, finally I managed to get the gist of it and we surfed on the little waves for an hour or so alongside our instructor. What a blast! Hungry again, after all that surfing, we headed out into town once again and ate lunch, sushi, at a place called Arigato – something cold and fresh like sushi was the perfect fit for this hot, hot day. I had the Spicy Tuna which was great! After lunch we headed back to the house, chilled by the pool all afternoon, accompanied by our DJ and Bartenders mixing us drinks. Towards the evening the Canadian girls came over, as we had planned together earlier, and we all had an amazing seafood dinner that our Chefs prepared for us – Ceviche, Sashimi, Carpaccio, Fried Calamari, Tuna Steaks – you name it, we had it. We went through a good number of beers, cocktails and drinking games as the hours progressed, and by 3AM, we finally called it quits. It had been fun, but none of us would make it to the sunrise!

Come 9AM, we barely made it on time to the airport, having woken up exhausted and all. However, once we made it through passport control, and were all sitting by our gate, hungover and ready to head back home to our lives, we were all at ease once more. In the plane, after take-off, we once more toasted to my Bachelor Party, my upcoming wedding, and to this unbelievable weekend we had meticulously planned and successfully executed. This would be one Tropical Bachelor Party weekend we would not be forgetting anytime soon, or ever, for that matter! Jaco Beach forever; Pura Vida, Costa Rica!
