Here’s Why Women Choose Termination of Pregnancy

The decision to have an abortion is never easy. There are many reasons why some women choose to terminate their pregnancy, and these range from not being financially prepared to simply just not ready or unplanned.

This article looks at the common reasons for having an abortion and who can have a termination of pregnancy in Singapore.

What causes termination of pregnancy in Singapore?

Financial burden, poor relationships, family influence, focus on career, health conditions, and unwanted pregnancy in Singapore are some of the common reasons for abortion.

Women who find out that their pregnant when they don’t expect it choose abortion as they feel that they are not mentally prepared for it and that they are not financially ready. The situation even gets complicated when the pregnant woman has a poor relationship with the father or when she feels that it isn’t the right time for a child in her life -probably because of wanting to advance her career or focusing on her family first.

Other reasons for getting an abortion are the following:

Family influence

Not mature enough

Not ready for parenthood

Health- or medical-related reasons

Don’t want people to know that she got pregnant

These reasons are common regardless of the woman’s age, race, income, educational level, or parental status. And most women who choose to terminate their unwanted pregnancy in Singapore aren’t looking for an easy way out. It’s a difficult and painful decision.

Who can have an abortion in Singapore?

Regardless of the reasons for terminating unwanted pregnancy in Singapore, only the following people can have an abortion:

Citizens up to 24 weeks or 6 months of pregnancy

Citizens after 24 weeks when their life is at risk or the fetus has a severe abnormality

Foreigners who have been residing in Singapore for four months or more

Foreigners who are married to a Singapore citizen or have permanent residence status

Foreigners whose life is in danger, and abortion is necessary to save her

Foreigners who hold a work permit/employment pass or married to a holder of a work permit/employment pass

Abortion can either be medical or surgical. Medical abortion is a procedure that uses medication, specifically Mifepristone and Misoprostol, to terminate an unwanted pregnancy in Singapore. It is usually performed on women who are up to 9 weeks pregnant. On the other hand, surgical abortion is performed on women who are in their first or second trimester.

No hospitalisation is required for the First trimester (8 to 12 weeks) surgical abortion. However, for the second trimester (12 to 24 weeks) surgical abortion, it requires one as the procedure is more complicated. Nevertheless, both surgical abortions are performed under sedation, and an instrument is used to widen the cervix opening. And using a vacuum aspiration or curette and medication, the pregnancy tissue is removed from the uterus lining.

Summing Up

If you are pregnant and are thinking of getting an abortion, it is best to consult a doctor to help you understand how complex your decision can be. You need to consider and weigh the pros and cons of your termination of pregnancy in Singapore.
