Hysterectomy — what does it entail?

A surgery to remove the uterus is known as a hysterectomy. The uterus is a pelvic organ bounded by the bladder and rectum in women. It is the organ in which a fetus develops and grows before birth.

What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus during surgery. It’s a common procedure used to treating various health complications in women. The fetus grows and is implanted in the middle of the uterus during pregnancy. After having a hysterectomy, women cannot become pregnant.

Only the uterus is removed during a partial hysterectomy, as opposed to a total hysterectomy, which involves removing both the uterus and the cervix. It is also possible to remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes during the procedure; this is known as total hysterectomy with ovariectomy. If both ovaries are removed, a woman will immediately enter menopause and experience its signs and symptoms.

After hysterectomy, woman will no longer experience monthly menstrual bleeding. If her ovaries are still intact after the surgery, she may not have any other menopause symptoms because the ovaries are still releasing the hormones estrogen. If surgery obstructs the ovarian blood flow, the ovaries cannot release hormones and the woman can experience warmth and other menopausal side-effects.
