Step 2 - Identify Your Target Market Who are your intended audience (target markets)? What are their social media habits? What are their methods of participating in these social media platforms and how do they get there? Forrester Research's Social Technographics Profile allows you to use your age, location, gender, and other data to determine the type of activity that people engage in on the social Web. This includes creating content, reviewing, collecting, watching, and so forth. You can identify which social media platforms they use based on their activities. For example, viewers are unlikely to join a social network such as Facebook or LinkedIn. However, they may watch YouTube videos and read blogs but not comment.

Step 3 - Conduct a Competitive Analys. What trends are there in social media? (e.g. which platforms are growing and which are decreasing) Which needs are your competitors not meeting? Who are your main competitors? What are the most effective practices for social media marketing? Do a SWOT analysis to identify your company's strengths and weaknesses as well as the opportunities and threats facing the economy and marketplace.

Step 4 - Designing innovative strategies. Choose the best social media platforms for reaching your target market. To achieve your specific goals, create a strategy that is unique for each social media platform. Every social media platform has its own unique features and communication methods. A corporate blog strategy may differ from one you use to reach your goals on a social network such as LinkedIn. A one-size strategy does not fit all.

For each social media platform, you will need to adjust the 8 C's in the Social Media Marketing Mix. These are some tips to help you accomplish this feat.

Classifysocial media channels by target market relevance (i.e. the ones that are closest to your target audience)

Learnhow to listen and behave on the platform, spark conversation and engage participants.

Respond to other users by acknowledging them and responding to them, while always remembering that you are a contributor, not promoter.

Collaborate with platform members to establish mutually beneficial relationships

Contributecontentto improve your reputation and become valued members, contributing to the building of the community

Connect with the influencers so that you can get their opinions on your product or service.

Communitycreation allows you to create discussion forums that allow customers to share ideas and get customer support.

Conversion Strategy execution into desired outcomes (e.g. increased brand awareness, website visitors, sales, etc.

Step 5 Monitor and Measure. Tune your marketing plan to achieve your goals based on feedback. Review and adjust the marketing plan for social media to keep up with changing consumer tastes and the social Web. If your subscribers and viewers are decreasing, you can adjust the content to better suit your target market's needs. You can adjust your strategy if you notice a decline in comments on your blog posts. Ask a question at each post's end that encourages people to reply. Planning and executing social media marketing campaigns is a never-ending process. To maximize your campaign's impact, you should monitor and adjust your strategies.
