What do you need to know about dental hygiene?

Good dental hygiene is essential as it helps prevent dental issues like gum diseases and infections. Poor oral hygiene can cause medical problems like loss of bone and heart disease. Below are five of our most popular suggestions to keep your mouth clean:

Flossing

Flossing can be one of the least-used procedures for maintaining dental health, as less than 21% of adult patients regularly floss their teeth. It's not surprising since it's a long-winded process, particularly if you're hurrying out the door or heading to bed.

But flossing can help remove food particles and other harmful substances that cannot be removed with a toothbrush. Flossing lets you reach into your teeth where no mouthwash could reach. Flossing should be done at least once daily, so you can rest or go about your day peacefully knowing that your teeth are thoroughly cleaned.

Limit your consumption of fizzy drinks and coffee.

Fizzy drinks are loaded with a large amount of sugar. Drinking them regularly could cause your teeth to decay as the breakdown of sugars in your mouth produce acids that cause erosion of the tooth's enamel.

Fizzy drinks and coffee are also responsible for tooth staining. If proper steps aren't followed to prevent this, it may result in permanently yellow staining.

Properly brushing

It's incredible how many people do not brush their teeth correctly enough. It's not difficult to understand; however, brushing your teeth properly can make all the impact. Be sure to brush twice per day!

Cleanse your tongue

Cleansing your teeth can be simple; however, you should also take care of your tongue. Modern toothbrushes come with a "tongue scraper" that is reversed and is something you must use every day to clean your tongue plaque and freshen your breath. The build-up of bacteria on your tongue is the main contributor to bad breath. However, using a tongue scraper can remove the dreadful bacteria and leave your breath fresh and clean.

Make sure to visit the dentist regularly.

It is recommended that we visit the dentist at least twice yearly; however, most of us do not. Going to your dentist is one of the essential steps toward having healthy teeth, as it's the only thing we can do on our own. This is why you must see a licensed dentist who will provide a professional opinion about your teeth and the correct guidance on what you can do to maintain your teeth. Personalised advice is the most effective option for each person's dental needs.

Don't forget that we provide regular appointments for dental hygiene in Cardiff at Cyncoed Dental Practice and offer unbiased and ethical guidance in our modern clinic.
