Facts About Wisdom Tooth extractions

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars most people get in their late teens or early twenties. They are called wisdom teeth because they typically appear when people are considered wiser than they were as children. While some people never have any problems with their wisdom teeth and erupt without incident, others may experience pain, crowding, and other problems that can lead to the need for wisdom tooth extractions.

Why Extract Wisdom Teeth?

There are a few different reasons why wisdom tooth extractions may be necessary. One common reason is that the teeth can become impacted. It means they do not have enough room to come in fully and become functional. When this happens, it can cause pain, swelling, and even infection. In some cases, impacted wisdom teeth can damage other teeth or jawbones.

Another reason to extract wisdom teeth is that they may come in at an angle. It can cause them to rub against other teeth and cause pain or damage. Additionally, they may eventually come through the gum tissue and become visible if they are not extracted. It can cause some aesthetic concerns.

The Procedure

Wisdom tooth extractions are generally considered to be relatively simple outpatient procedures. The first step is to numb the area around the teeth, so the patient does not feel any pain. Next, the dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue so that they can access the teeth. The tooth will then be removed in one or more pieces. Finally, the incision will be closed with stitches.

After the Procedure

Immediately after the procedure, it is normal to experience some swelling and bruising. These symptoms should start to improve after a few days. It is also normal to experience some pain and discomfort. It is important to take it easy for the first few days and to avoid using straws, smoking, or drinking from a bottle. These activities can cause the incision to open up.

After a week or so, the swelling and bruising should start to go down, and the pain should improve. Most people can return to their normal activities after a week or so. However, following your dentist's instructions is important and ensuring that the extraction site is healing properly.
