THE SURGICAL OPTIONS

MICS (PHACO emulsification) surgery where a small 1.8 mm opening is created with a fine blade, small 5-6 mm opening is created manually in the front membrane of the natural lens thus creating a “bag”. A thin probe (Phaco needle) is inserted through the 1.8 mm opening to liquefy the natural lens which is subsequently sucked out and cleaned. A 6 mm foldable IOL is then inserted and fixed into the bag.

ZEPTO Cataract surgery wherein the opening into the front membrane is created with an RF (Radio frequency) ring of a size of 5.5 mm and the precise opening is created. The rest of the method is manual.

ROBOTIC CATARACT SURGERY - FLACS (FEMTO LASER ASSISTED CATARACT SURGERY) is the latest technology used for cataract surgery available in Bharti Eye Foundation since 2009 when it was introduced in India. In FLACS all the initials.

Steps:

 1. The small opening in the front,

 2. The opening in the front membrane of the cataract,

 3. The making of small pieces of Cataract is done with the LASER. Only the removal of pieces of cataract and insertion of IOL is done manually. FLACS is safer and more accurate. It is also easier for hard cataracts and complicated cataracts to be operated by this technique primarily because it is a closed chamber technique wherein the cuts are used only to remove the cataract pieces and to place the IOL in the bag. All other steps are done with the laser rays in the closed eye which makes it very safe. You will be kept awake during a supervised sedation procedure but won't be able to observe the surgeon at work. The operated-on eye will be sedated and so essentially unconscious. We'll cover the other eye.
