CPEng New Zealand Registration Authority

The title of CPEng is issued to an experienced engineer who has been evaluated as fulfilling a quality mark of competence. It shows that the engineer can successfully cope with complicated engineering issues that need expert technical knowledge. The candidate must be assessed again and again every six years for the maintenance of their Chartered credential.

Although an engineer with this title has to show New Zealand-Specific technical experience, CPEng is a competency mark with global recognition.

Chartered Professional Engineer, which is the full form of CPEng is a protected title, and those having this title are registered with the Registration Authority for Chartered Professional Engineers and must follow a Code of Ethical Conduct.

For the last few years, the Government has been working on potential changes to engineering regulation way. In March 2022, Cabinet agreed to a new licensing regime for an engineer doing safety-critical work, but it will take some years to fully come into operation.

In the meantime, the engineer thinking that they may want to become a CPEng needs to apply for assessment, even if they might need to be licensed in the future.

Registration Authority:

The Registration Authority is Engineering New Zealand according to the Chartered Professional Engineers Act 2002. It means it maintains the Register of Chartered Professional Engineers and handles assessments and applications.

Chartered Professional Engineers Council (CPEC):
