The Supreme Court has refused to hear a petition seeking candidate photos and EVM results.

The Supreme Court declined to hear a petition seeking directions to the Election Commission to replace political party symbols on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with candidates' photographs and personal information in a decision issued on Tuesday.

Chief Justice U U Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi dismissed the petition after the poll body's counsel assured the authorities that the representation submitted by petitioner Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay would be considered.

A petitioner argued that if candidate information is required, parties will be forced to give tickets to those who have credibility, reducing the possibility of criminality in politics. Attorney General R Venkataramani, on the other hand, stated that while the petitioner's concerns are valid, he finds it difficult to agree with the logic of the argument. Voting on the EVM takes place at the end of the voting process, whereas the decision to vote is made much earlier. It does not seem appropriate to say that a political party's symbol is the most nefarious aspect. Every political party has its own identity. "The logo is the most visible point of identity," he explained to the bench.

Furthermore, CJI Lalit stated that elections are inextricably linked to political parties, which is why the 10th Schedule prohibits a person from changing political parties after being elected.
