THE STORY OF THOR AND THE RED DRIVER

Once Thor returned from a battle with the giants in Jotunnheim. It is not clear where the goat-drawn cart was, but the thunder god had to walk back to Asgard.

As he was walking

Thor saw a large river in front of him. Thinking about how to cross the river, Thor saw a boatman on the other side. Thor then called for a ride across the river. "Bring me over, and I'll gladly share my food"

The ferryman looked at the large passenger, "Huh, dressed like a bunch of rags, not even shoes on. I don't think someone like you has a home to go to, so don't be in a hurry to do anything. "

Thor bellowed

"Bring that boat over. Tell me, what's so special about it?"

"This boat belongs to Hildoll the tatkuink wolf-hunter. He has given me this boat with one rule: never carry thieves, but only worthy men. So name yourself. , get rid of the loser!"

"I am Odin's son, Meili's brother, Magni's father, Thor - the most powerful god. Then who are you, ferryman?"

"I'm Harbard, and I don't have to hide it."

"Your mouth isn't worth it for me to wade across this river and get wet. Hurry up and bring the boat over here!"

"Don't be in such a hurry. Let me tell you, you've never faced anyone like me, not even when you fought Hrungnir."

"Huh" Thor roared "You know Hrungnir and his stone head? My Mjolnir crushed that stone skull. What were you doing then?"

"I fought with Fjolva five winters in a row on the island of Algroen. I beheaded countless warriors, and spent the night with seven sisters in turn. So what can you do, Thor?"

"I slain the giant Thjazi- now his eyes are still hovering in the night sky. Can you do anything like that?"

"I seduced the Black Riders away from their husbands, making these sorceresses swear to me. Then there was a giant named Lebard- a rather difficult man. He gave me a staff. And In return for that favor, I made him stop smiling."

"What a way of repaying that. I have come to Jotunnheim, slaying an army of giants to protect Midgard. So what can you do?"

"I ignited a war in Yalland. I put one's blade in another's throat. And you know what, Thor, I've given the gods a legion on Valhalla! Thor, your hand is strong but the heart is weak."

"Unruly ferryman! I have reached the viking clothings eastern bank of the Iving River, where the children of Svarang tried to attack me" Then Thor picked up a rock and threw it at the ferryman, but he dodged "They attacked me. That's what my company is like. But when I went to them they begged for mercy. So what can you do?"

"I also went to the east, and met a beautiful princess. She immediately fell in love with me and left everything for me. Can you do anything like that?"

"I have come to Aegir's island of Helssey. I have slain Bersesk's brides."

"Oh, Thor, are you so humiliated now? What kind of man would kill a woman?"

"They're wolves in human form. They attacked my ship with claws and pestles. What did you do?"

I stood at the border of Asgard

raising my banner and dyeing my spear red."

"You have the guts to go to war with the gods?" Thor bellowed. "Enough bragging! If I go there, you'll scream in pain!"

"Stay strong Thor. Now if you stay at home you'll have a good chance of knowing which man has slept with Sif!"

Thor cursed, picked up a rock and threw the boat, but couldn't hit the target. "I can't believe a ferryman would dare challenge this Thor!"

The ferryman laughed, "Don't let me cross the river."

"Okay, if you didn't want to" Thor gave in. "Is there any other way to cross the river?"

"Yes, but it's many miles away. If you go fast, you can be back in Asgard before dawn."

And so Thor had to find his way across the river again, and the boatman Harbard laughed the whole river.

The whole thing would not have been worth mentioning if later, in one of the introductions of his names, Odin did not blurt out one name: Gray-bearded Harbard.
