Requirements For PEO Work Experience

As per Ontario law, the requirement for PEO work experience is four years of engineering work experience before you can get your professional engineering licence. A minimum of one year of your experience must be attained in a Canadian jurisdiction. It ensures that you have a sufficient amount of exposure to Canadian engineering legislation, codes, technical standards and regulations.

PEO assesses each applicant’s engineering experience against 5 quality-based criteria given below:

·       Application of theory

·       Management of engineering

·       Practical experience

·       Awareness of the social implications of engineering

·       Communication skills

To get yourself licensed, you need to show and prove a minimum of 48 months of acceptable, verifiable engineering experience you earned after completing your undergraduate engineering degree.

Do you need an engineering licence given by PEO?

As per the Professional Engineers Act, the ‘practice of professional engineering’ means ‘any act of designing, planning, composing, assessing, advising, directing, reporting or supervising that needs the application of engineering principles and concerns the safeguard of health, life, property, economic interests, public welfare or the environment, or the managing of any such act’.

To determine whether you are practicing professional engineering, you need to ask yourself the following three questions:

·       Are you designing, planning, composing, assessing, advising, directing, reporting or managing any of these acts?

·       Do you need engineering principles to do the act?

·       Does the act concern the safeguarding of health, life, property, economic interests, public welfare or the environment?

If the answers to all these three questions are yes, then you need to work as a professional engineer. Therefore, you need a licence from PEO.

The following are the documents you need to submit to prove your PEO work experience:

You need to submit the below-given documents for all the engineering experience that you have accumulated from your bachelor’s conferral date up to the present date.

2.  Experience Record for each of your engineering-related employments

3.  Experience referee list

4.  If applicable, a signed Pre-graduate Experience Form for each pre-graduate engineering experience.

To assist with the PEO review and help you make sure that your PEO engineering experience record provides sufficient information, it is suggested that your Record be organized in the below-given order:

1.  Complete the Experience Record Form (including the company name, location and employment dates (month and year). Absence periods from employment (unemployed, traveling) must also be listed with dates.

2.  For each position about which you report, give PEO a small paragraph describing your job responsibilities with an emphasis on the engineering duties.

Describe how the work experience earned in that position fulfills each of the five criteria (application of theory, practical experience, communication skills, management of engineering and knowledge of the social implications of engineering).
