What is the difference between Step Up and Step Down transformer?

The major difference between the Step-Down and Step up transformers is their working operation and performance. The Step up transformer increases the level of input voltage and delivers to the load. While the step down transformer is the opposite. A step-down transformer decreases the level of input voltage at the load.

If you want to discuss differences in detail including important characteristics, winding, voltage, the thickness of the conductor, number of turns, and application. Read below:

The transformer is a voltage control device. It is used to transform and distribute the alternating current power. The purpose of using a transformer in daily life is to make a balance between electricity generation of high voltage and consumption which was done at very low voltages.

Definition

Step up transformer

When the transformer refers to the step-up transformer, it is defining the voltage level that is increased on the output section. In these transformers, more turns are considered at the second end than the primary end. The great voltage is induced in the secondary winding of the transformer.

This type of transformer primary coil is constructed from thick insulated copper wire. However, the low-magnitude current moves across it. The level of voltage turns is in the ratio of 1:2.T stands for turns and E stands for the coils of the transformer.

Step down transformer

The main function of a transformer is voltage regulation and safety. With the name, it can easily be understood that a step-down transformer is used to decrease the level of voltage for final usage. In step-down transformers, More turns are considered at the primary end than at the secondary end. So for successful function, the final load receives a decreased voltage level.

The turning ratio of voltages is 2: 1. They are constructed with two or more coil wounds on the iron center of the device. They used to operate based on the magnetic induction principle between the coils. The Primary section voltage is applied to the winding magnetic of the iron parts with the secondary coils of the device. Suman Electrical is the best transformer supplier in Noida as well as all over India.

This way, they convert voltage from the primary to the secondary side of the transformer.

Key Differences:

● When the output (secondary) value is more than its input (Primary) value is referred to as a step-up transformer. When the output voltage is less is referred to as a step-down transformer.

● When the Low voltage section is the primary side and the high voltage section is the secondary, it is a type of step-up transformer. While the low voltage winding on the secondary side is a step-down transformer.

● When the magnetic field and current are less developed in the secondary section, it is extremely increased on the primary side, which is in the step-up transformer. Whereas, in the step-down transformer, the low voltage is on the secondary side. That’s why their current and magnetic field is great.

Basis Differences:

1.  Output

In a Step-up transformer, the output value is more than that of the supply voltage. While in the step-down transformer, the output value is less than that of the main voltage.

2. Winding

In the step-up transformer, LV winding is in the primary, and the HV section is in the secondary. In the step-down transformer, the HV section is in the primary and the LV winding is in the secondary.

3. Voltage

In the step-up type, the secondary voltage is more considerable than the primary voltage. In step-down, the secondary voltage is less than its primary value.

4. Number of turns

When the number of turns in the primary winding is less than the secondary winding, it is a step-up type. When the number of turns is higher in the second section than in the primary section, it is of a step-down type.

5. Current

When the primary current is higher than the second value is the step-up transformer. On the other, the secondary current is more than the primary current in the step-down transformer.

6. Application

● For the power transmissions, a step-up transformer is installed. For example Generator transformer in the power plant is one application of the step-up type.

● At the time of the power distribution system, a step-down transformer is applied. For example, the device installed in the residential colonies is a type of step-down transformer.
