Is it necessary to shave your head after Umrah?

As we know, every Muslim wants to make Umrah because it is an auspicious journey. This holy pilgrimage includes many mandatory rituals. Each ritual is very significant and spiritual. One of the necessary acts of the sacred trip to Mecca is shaving the head. In this scenario, study this topic for more information: “Is it necessary to shave your head after Umrah?”

Millions of Muslims perform Umrah as a form of worship throughout the year. It is the beautiful Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The fundamental objective of this pilgrimage is to atone for major sins and seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty.

According to Sharia, male pilgrims can either shave their heads or cut their hair after Umrah. If they do not perform this act, they should slaughter a goat to atone for it and distribute its meat to the poor. However, women can only trim their hair.

Note: Most people don’t know about the rules and regulations of Umrah. So I suggest you first completely read about the guidance of Umrah then book your Umrah Packages 2023.

What is Halq?

Halq is the act of shaving the head completely after undertaking Umrah. Only men are eligible for this ritual. Pilgrims must complete this activity to leave the state of Ihram after Tawaf and Sa’i.

What is Taqsir?

Taqsir refers to the minor cutting of the hair and is also recommended for women making the Umrah. Women are required to trim their hair equal to the length of their fingertips.

Shaving the head after Umrah

Many pilgrims cut their hair after Umrah instead of shaving their heads. This action is correct. But it is preferable to shave the head after a holy pilgrimage to Mecca. Many verses of the Holy Quran highlight the importance of this ritual.

According to Islamic belief, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did his Umrah with his companions. Some of them shave their heads, while others trim their hair. The Prophet (PBUH) prayed for both, but he first prayed three times for those who shaved. He only included the others for the 4th time. This indicates that shaving one’s head is considerably better and preferable. However, it is sufficient if one only trims a small portion of his hair short. Additionally, this choice is only available to men. Women cut only a small portion of their hair by an inch or less.

Method to perform Halq or Taqsir

If you have hair on your head, halq or taqsir are required. You must complete one of the two before you are able to leave the state of Ihram.

The entire head must be shaved in order to complete halq. It is Sunnah to start halq/taqsir from the right side while facing the Qibla. If a pilgrim has no hair on his head, he must pass a razor over his head to complete the ritual.

The length of a fingertip must be trimmed from each end of the hair when performing Taqsir (about an inch). It is sufficient to simply trim a fingertip’s length. Cut the hair until it is confident that the minimum amount of hair has been trimmed.

Hiring someone else to cut your hair is both acceptable and common. Pilgrims can cut their hair to come out of Ihram.

Conclusion

Umrah is a holy journey to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time for 365 days. It is a shortened version of Hajj.

According to Sharia, male pilgrims can either trim their hair or shave their heads after Umrah. If they don’t do this, they should sacrifice a goat for atonement and give its meat to the needy. But women can only cut their hair.
