Places To Celebrate Makar Sankranti In India- Bharat Taxi

Makar Sankranti is one of the few Indian holidays that is celebrated with pomp and grandeur all over the country. Pongal/Makar Sankranti is a four-day festival in most southern states, like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. In the Northern states, however, it is called Uttarayan and marks the beginning of the sun's move into the zodiac sign of Capricorn. In Sanskrit, Makar means "Capricorn" and Sankranti means "transition." After the harvest is over, this change is a sign of a fresh start and a reason to have a feast and party.

Parents often plan a vacation around this time of year because kids have a short break. And one of the best ways to learn about Indian culture and festivals is to visit a place during its celebrations. We've put together a list of six special places to visit for Makar Sankranti in 2023.

Amritsar, Punjab

Lohri is a community festival that is celebrated all over Punjab. It marks the start of a new harvest season and spreads the spirit of unity, brotherhood, and honour. Also, it means that winter is over. On the night of Lohri, the celebration includes making a big campfire and sitting around it with family and friends. Followers sing and dance around the fire as they throw peanuts, til, and Chirwa (beaten rice) into the flames. Aside from the celebrations, the famous Golden Temple, the Wagah Border (the border between India and Pakistan), and Jallianwala Bagh are also big draws in Amritsar.

Hyderabad, Telangana

Even though Hyderabad is a big city, it has kept some of its culture and history. In this part of India, Makar Sankranti takes place over four days. On the first day, called Bhogi, old things are burned in a campfire while people chant and dance around it. On Sankranti, people wear new clothes, paint their homes, draw rangolis, and make Chakkara Pongal, a dish made of milk, rice, and jaggery. Cattles are praised and held in high regard for what they do for the produce. Some of the places that people come to see in Hyderabad are the Charminar, Ramoji Film City, Golconda Fort, Birla Mandir, Salar Jung Museum, and Chowmahalla Palace, to name a few.

Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Madurai is also well-known for the traditional sport of Jallikattu, which is played during Pongal, and for its many jasmine flowers and traditional foods. It is close to the small villages nearby, and this is where a popular festival like Pongal can be seen and experienced in its true form. At dawn on the first day, farmers and their families give thanks to the Sun god by giving a portion of the harvest.

As part of the celebration, people make colourful and unique Rangolis and serve sweet Sakkarai Pongal, which is made of jaggery and rice in mud pots. Mango leaves are hung on the front door, and the whole house is painted to honour the celebrations. In addition to decorations, there are special poojas done during harvest time to honour the role of cattle. This old city is also home to the Thiruppuramkundram temple, the Thirumalai Nayakar Palace, and the Gandhi Museum.

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

The ancient Thanjavur paintings and the Brihadeeshwara Temple give the town of Thanjavur a lot of its fame. But the green paddy fields all around it add to its beauty. Also, Thanjavur is the region in Tamil Nadu that grows the most rice. At the special pooja for cattle on Mattu Pongal day at the Brihadeshwara temple, you can see how old traditions are still kept. The people who live there do rangolitrials, which make the streets look active and busy. Don't forget to stop by the Brihadeeshwara Temple as well. This beautiful temple has something that makes it stand out. The main Gopurami is built so that it never casts a shadow on the ground.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Ahmedabad is one of the most important cities in Gujarat. It is a great place to learn about the state's rich culture. It is the best place to watch the Makara Sankranti festival of artistic kites. Every street in Ahmedabad is a kaleidoscope of activity, from bazaars that sell different-colored Manjha (the thread tied to kites) and colourful kites to food stalls that sell tasty treats like Jalebis. Adalaj Stepwell, Sabarmati Ashram, Sidi Saiyyed and Jama Mosque, Auto World Vintage Car Museum, Calico Museum of Textiles, and Kankaria lake are also well-known places in Ahmedabad.

Mysore, Karnataka

Mysore is the cleanest city in India for 2015 and 2016. It has a lot of culture, history, and natural beauty. At the harvest festival, people thank the gods and spirits for a good harvest, wear new clothes, and make rangolis. The best part is making Ellu-Bella, a mix of fried groundnuts, jaggery, white sesame, and dry coconut that everyone in the neighbourhood shares. Women also give each other pieces of sugarcane, bananas, Kum Kum, and Haldi. As a neighbourhood party, people enjoy flying kites. Cattle are given different prayers, and then they are taken on a parade to celebrate. Visit the beautiful Mysore Palace, Brindavan garden, Chamundeshwari temple, Mysore Museum and Zoo on a trip to Mysore.
