Makar Sankranti is one of the few Indian holidays that is celebrated with pomp and grandeur all over the country. Pongal/Makar Sankranti is a four-day festival in most southern states, like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. In the Northern states, however, it is called Uttarayan and marks the beginning of the sun's move into the zodiac sign of Capricorn. In Sanskrit, Makar means "Capricorn" and Sankranti means "transition." After the harvest is over, this change is a sign of a fresh start and a reason to have a feast and party.

Followers sing and dance around the fire as they throw peanuts, til, and Chirwa (beaten rice) into the flames. Even though Hyderabad is a big city, it has kept some of its culture and history. In this part of India, Makar Sankranti takes place over four days. On the first day, called Bhogi, old things are burned in a campfire while people chant and dance around it. On Sankranti, people wear new clothes, paint their homes, draw rangolis, and make Chakkara Pongal, a dish made of milk, rice, and jaggery. Cattles are praised and held in high regard for what they do for the produce. Some of the places that people come to see in Hyderabad are the Charminar, Ramoji Film City, Golconda Fort, Birla Mandir, Salar Jung Museum, and Chowmahalla Palace, to name a few.
Madurai, Tamil Nadu
Madurai is also well-known for the traditional sport of Jallikattu, which is played during Pongal, and for its many jasmine flowers and traditional foods. It is close to the small villages nearby, and this is where a popular festival like Pongal can be seen and experienced in its true form. At dawn on the first day, farmers and their families give thanks to the Sun god by giving a portion of the harvest.
As part of the celebration, people make colourful and unique Rangolis and serve sweet Sakkarai Pongal, which is made of jaggery and rice in mud pots. Mango leaves are hung on the front door, and the whole house is painted to honour the celebrations. In addition to decorations, there are special poojas done during harvest time to honour the role of cattle. This old city is also home to the Thiruppuramkundram temple, the Thirumalai Nayakar Palace, and the Gandhi Museum.
Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
The ancient Thanjavur paintings and the Brihadeeshwara Temple give the town of Thanjavur a lot of its fame. But the green paddy fields all around it add to its beauty. Also, Thanjavur is the region in Tamil Nadu that grows the most rice. At the special pooja for cattle on Mattu Pongal day at the Brihadeshwara temple, you can see how old traditions are still kept.
