Defenders Northwest, LLC, and its owners were named in a major lawsuit alleging fraud, which shook the Defender community. The suspected scammers, who were based in Gig Harbor, Washington, built a repair service that preys on trusting Defender aficionados. According to the company's website, it serves the close-knit Defender community by offering parts and repair services. In one case mentioned in the lawsuit, Defenders Northwest is accused of stealing a vintage Land Rover Defender that they were hired to fix.


The business allegedly continued to operate the con for years, issuing false invoices and inventing justifications for why the owners' automobiles couldn't be delivered. The proprietors of the business initially claimed that their store had been burglarized, which was followed by more delays due to COVID-19 issues and infrastructure issues.


Without the clients' consent, it is claimed that Defenders Northwest used the projects they were given to secure sponsored parts for the renowned SEMA vehicle show in Las Vegas. Automotive specialised equipment manufacturers may exhibit alongside automakers at SEMA to introduce new, cutting-edge products and make connections with global industry customers. The rehabilitation job, which involved up to mid-six figures in unexplained costs and forged invoices, was a skillfully planned deception, according to the legal filings.


From 1993 until 1997, Land Rover Defenders were offered for sale domestically. Later versions were subject to significant DOT restrictions including side-impact door beams and front-seat airbags. Given the Defenders were a low-volume car, Land Rover decided not to incorporate these safety improvements. The Defender is still in great demand today because of its reputation as being extremely robust and because it resembles vintage Land Rovers. Due to the Land Rover Defender's consistent exterior design throughout its entire manufacturing life, it might be challenging to tell the difference between a legitimate 1988 Defender and an unauthorised 1998 Defender with an earlier VIN number. These similarities are sometimes used by dishonest restoration companies to entice clients for restoration services that are illegal under both state and federal law.
