Volkanovski, 34, put up an incredible fight that saw Makhachev get knocked down late in the final round.
The Australian could have won a second UFC title belt, become the No. 1 PFP fighter in the world and continue his 12-fight winning streak, but he couldn't finish the job.
The judges' controversial decision should not come as a surprise to anybody because Makhachev was more efficient, and pulled off four of nine takedowns, while Volkanovski failed on all four of his attempts.

Bo Nickal, a three-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion, won a contract with the UFC last year through Dana White's Contender Series.
