Wood milling

Milling is one of the ways to process wood with the help of rotating cutters.

Today there are 3 types of milling: manual, machine, and machine milling.

Where milling is used

Material is milled to create three-dimensional parts. Milling make studs, eyelets, grooves, cut patterns on the wood. Furniture production, outdoor advertising, kitchen utensils - are made with a milling machine.

Stages of processing on a milling machine

Milling can be divided into several stages. First, rough processing of wood is carried out: remove the unwanted layer of wood, give the workpiece the desired size and shape.

The final stage is the finishing of the wood. At both stages, a milling machine

is used, it is able to process hard and soft types of wood.

When processing wood, the machine must change the speed and mode of operation, so serial production industries mainly use equipment with CNC.

Types of milling machines

Milling machines are divided into 6 types:

  1. The machine with the lower distribution of the spindle. It is used to cut volumetric, rectilinear, curvilinear surfaces. Solid and compound cutters are used on this machine.
  2. Machine with upper spindle distribution. It is used to cut decorative reliefs and grooves on the wood surface, process workpieces with curvilinear contours.
  3. CNC milling machine. Universal device that is used: for drilling, cutting patterns and drawings on the workpiece, balusters.
  4. Milling and engraving machine. Cuts and engraves the material. Used to create relief surfaces.
  5. Milling and copying machine. It is used for milling straight and curved contours, grooves, slots, drilling and countersinking holes in furniture and joinery workpieces.
  6. Vertical milling and copying machine. Used in the production of four wood products. For example, they cut out legs for a chair, a table, handles for tools.
